What You MUST Know Before Leaving Home with a Gun: http://www.ConcealedCarryTrainingVide... Someone asking for change is not always asking for change. Sometimes this is the classic "shark bump" as a predator tries to feel you out before an attack. Situational awareness is key to survival. If someone asks for change, you don't have change to give them.

Michael Shavers
One night another Police officer and myself were ambushed one night from the top of a flight of stairs. I heard three shots from the top of the stairs the first shot struck the steal door frame and the splatter hit the left side of my face. I returned fire with one shot, then suspect disappeared into a doorway. Believing the suspect was barricaded in the apartment SWAT responded and entered hours later to find the suspect deceased.

Later I found out the suspect had fired 5 rounds at us, and I had shot him through the liver, heart, and lung. After dealing with IA and Homicide I went home 10 hours later and found bullet fragments in my legs. Thank God he was a bad shot, and didn't directly hit me or the other officer. It doesn't mater how many shots you fire, the only ones that count are the ones placed on target. Your hearing will shut down, and you with get tunnel vision very detailed and washed of color.

"Put your gun down"? Nope. After the shooting, reholster your gun and maintain Condition Orange until the police arrive. Have your hands up, of course, and explain to them you just shot someone. Let the police remove your holstered handgun.

In late 2012, I was looking to bring someone new on board to lead the USCCA's media team and to provide both a vision and a plan for expanding and improving Concealed Carry Magazine. With a background in law enforcement, firearms training and the publishing world, Kevin Michalowski turned out to be the perfect choice.

When Kevin first jumped in to his new role as executive editor of CCM, he told me that his goal was to make each issue "better than the last."

More than five years and 20-some people added to his team later, Kevin still operates within and works toward that noble mission. Somehow, he manages to deliver on that promise every single time. But it doesn't end there. Kevin's entire team — Beth, Bruce, Carla, Carol, Daniel, Dusty, Ed, Jake, Jared, Kelly, Ken M., Ken W., Kurt, Mark B., Mark W., Robb, Sarah, Thomas and Tyler — plays a role in producing interesting and lifesaving content here at the USCCA. And people even outside the world of firearms and self-defense have started taking notice.

You may recall that in 2016, the Niche Council named Concealed Carry Magazine the "Best Consumer Publication" in the nation. In 2017, they named CCM the "Best Association Magazine" in the nation. Both years, the USCCA's "ultimate resource for responsibly armed Americans" beat out more than 200 other candidates across various industries.

I'm honored to report that in 2018, Niche Media bestowed upon us not one but THREE premier awards:
  1. Best Niche Use of Video ("Proving Ground" series)
  2. Best B2C Magazine (Concealed Carry Magazine)
  3. Best Niche Media Company (Delta Defense/USCCA)

Robb Conlon, national sales representative for Armed American Radio, was on hand to accept the "hat trick" of awards at the 12[SUP]th[/SUP] Annual Niche Media Conference, held March 5 to 7, 2018, in Louisville, Kentucky. Robb told me, "I had literally everyone come up to me asking about our culture, our company and how they could hire better to build their product. It was unreal because everyone wanted to know what the secret was. I told them plenty of things, but dedication to a cause, a drive to outdo each previous issue and the right people in the organization were the top three."

Kevin weighed in as well: "The fact that we won three awards in three different categories shows the overall quality of our entire team. This level of work is never the result of the efforts of just one person. We have an amazing team and I am proud to be a part of it."

Honestly, I believe the USCCA delivers the best self-defense content in the nation. I'm humbled to have someone like Kevin leading the great group of people that helps to make that happen.

Congratulations, team.

Tim Schmidt

We recently wrapped up our 4[SUP]th[/SUP] Annual USCCA Concealed Carry Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.

I spent a good portion of my weekend meeting with and talking to fellow responsibly armed Americans from all across the country, including a few men and women who joined us from as far as Nevada, Florida, New York and California. I have to admit, knowing that a ton of our members live in the latter makes me really happy.

Overall, the event was a resounding success. I was absolutely blown away on Monday when Katie, our PR & events manager, told me that a whopping 14,246 people joined us over the course of the weekend. We've experienced tremendous growth since our very first USCCA Expo in West Bend, Wisconsin, and I couldn't be more proud and grateful. I'll also be the first to admit that it simply wouldn't be possible to put on such an incredible event without a LOT of help. From the world-class exhibitors to the engaging speakers to the incredible USCCA team (including dozens of our certified instructors), everyone who came out to the Expo played an integral role in its success. I appreciate every single one of them.

Of course, at the end of the day, it's people like YOU who bring it all together and make the whole thing so meaningful. The USCCA Expo exists for you and because of you, so thank you for your attendance and your support. (If you haven't had a chance to make it to one of our Expos yet, rest assured we're working to bring one to a location near you!)

This year, we made our Live-Fire Range FREE for all attendees. The line was packed all weekend long, but our range staff reported that those standing in line were both gracious and excited for the opportunity to shoot firearms they hadn't tried before.

Our Women's Concealed Carry Showroom was on the main floor this year, which meant that visitors could go directly to vendors' booths after finding new products they loved. Staff in that area told me that dozens of women returned to the showroom to show off their purchases and say "thank you." How cool is that?

Several attendees told me they loved having the USCCA Store so close to the main booth. USCCA staff in both locations certainly had their work cut out for them all weekend long!

Of course, with the rise in attendees from last year, there were a few bumps in the road, including long lines to get in to the Expo and some confusion over seminar times and pricing. I hope you'll trust me when I say we are already working on improving all of these "glitches" before next year. If you attended and experienced any hiccups, I appreciate your patience and hope that the service you received once inside made up for any inconveniences you experienced.

It was a whirlwind weekend but certainly one for the books. Again, a special thank you to our sponsors, all the incredible exhibitors who were at the top of their game all weekend long, the insightful and engaging speakers and presenters who garnered overflowing audiences, the hardworking and dedicated Expo team who planned this event all year long, and the irreplaceable USCCA team members who came home exhausted but smiling.

I can't wait for next year. See you in Pittsburgh?

Oh, one more thing: If you attended the Expo, be sure to take the short survey that should already have hit your inbox. Remember, we get better because of YOUR feedback. Thanks!

Take Care and Stay Safe,

Tim Schmidt

Well, we've hit another exciting milestone here at the USCCA.

Armed American Radio is set to kick off its 10th season this coming Sunday. To be honest, it's been quite a journey...

It all started back in 2003 when I had to get a little "creative" with my marketing. You see, I had just produced the very first issue of Concealed Carry Magazine that summer, but I wasn't exactly garnering the number of subscribers for which I had hoped. In an attempt to get my new publication into as many hands as possible, I purchased a list of about 30,000 names and then devised a "plan" (in reality, a small "bribe"): I decided that the first 500 individuals who, after receiving a free sample copy of CCM, responded that they'd like to subscribe to upcoming issues would also receive a free .45 ACP bullet keychain. (I guess I've always liked giving away "ammo.")

My "bribe" worked: I ended up getting almost 1,000 initial subscribers. And of those people? A guy named Mark Walters.

Now, if you've ever heard Mark Walters on-air, you already know that he's passionate and outspoken. Perhaps not surprisingly, then, he contacted me almost right away to let me know he was interested in writing for Concealed Carry Magazine. His Ordinary Guy column debuted in CCM shortly thereafter.

Of course, that column evolved into another column — One to the Head — and One to the Head evolved into a little show called Armed American Radio.

In 2015, Mark was named the "Gun Rights Defender of the Year" at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference "in recognition and appreciation for his tireless efforts on behalf of the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Amendment rights of all Americans."

And things are still looking up:

Today, AAR airs in 28 of the 40 largest radio markets in the United States. The show is available on the USCCA app, iHeartRadio, TuneIn FM, Google Play Music and iTunes.

Robb Conlon, national sales representative for Armed American Radio, said that "broadcast media like radio and on-demand audio like our podcast allows us to keep our members and listeners updated on the fight to keep America free. There's no better time to tune in to AAR than right now. We all need to band together, and AAR is a great way to get your daily dose of freedom." Robb has been an integral part of the tremendous growth we've experienced over the last year. And, of course, Mark Walters himself has offered unwavering commitment to making AAR a trusted and beloved program all across the country.

To be honest, who would have thought that one "ordinary" guy out of the 30,000 people on that mailing list almost 15 years ago would become such a crucial voice for the USCCA and for responsibly armed Americans everywhere?

I'll admit it: Not me. But, wow, I couldn't be more grateful for how it all turned out.

Take Care and Stay Safe,
