Holy smokes! Is this really happening?!

OK, I'll admit that my initial response to this particular text message was a little more, shall we say, intense than that. But truth be told, I'm surprised I could formulate any words at all after finding out that the folks over at 60 Minutes wanted to fly me out to New York for an exclusive interview.

My first thought — after disbelief, of course — was one of absolute, consummate, all-out terror. After that? Reluctance (and maybe even denial).

No way! I can't do it.

Of course, this wasn't the sort of thing you just "dismissed." 60 Minutes has, after all, been a staple on American televisions for almost 50 years.

So, after I had a second to catch my breath and quash that not-so-little voice of doubt, I sat down and thought about — and I mean really thought about — what this incredible, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity might mean for me, for the USCCA and, most importantly, for millions of responsibly armed Americans all across the country.

I thought about all the ways this sort of thing could help positively impact the current landscape and the pervasive attitudes of scorn and blame that so often plague men and women who carry firearms for self-defense. I thought about all the ways it could help shift focus from the myths and the misinformation to the undeniable, irrefutable truth about responsible gun ownership and concealed carry: that is, of course, that good guys and gals with guns help make our world a safer place.

And I guess I just sort of knew — despite all my reservations and that biting sense of fear — that I had to do it. In fact, I started to realize I had a responsibility to do it. I owed it to responsible gun owners everywhere to say "yes."

And so I did.

Now, I don't want to give too much away, but I can tell you that the interview — at least from my perspective — went exceedingly well. Of course, there's no telling how things went on their end — and whether or not they'll cut the footage to include the positive, pro-gun perspective I brought to the table ... well, that's up in the air.

But the bottom line is that I was afforded a national platform from which to talk about things that really matter — things like responsible gun ownership and concealed carry reciprocity (including the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017 that's currently making its way through the Senate). The simple fact that I was able to give honest, law-abiding, responsibly armed Americans a voice on that national stage? That's HUGE.

You know, now that everything is said and done, I have to admit that my initial reluctance was quite unfounded; after we got talking, things got easier. What can I say? When you're passionate about something, it's not hard to talk about it — especially when the truth is on your side.

That being said, I hope you'll tune in to CBS on Sunday, February 11, 2018, to see my exclusive interview with 60 Minutes.

In the meantime,

Trust me ... you DON'T want to miss this!

It's happened again. Tragedy. Heartbreak. Once again, precious human lives have been victimized and cut short by evil circumstances beyond their control.

Preliminary reports indicate that former student Nikolas Cruz, 19, opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, killing 17 people and wounding 14 more.

We don't (and probably never will) know all the details of what happened inside those walls, but that doesn't stop us from asking why anyone would do something so terrible.

In fact, in the aftermath of a tragedy such as this, that desire to know why is what sometimes pushes people to thoughtlessly say things that perhaps they wouldn't normally say.

You see, when we don't have all the answers, the easiest thing in the world to do is to point fingers:

"This kid obviously had unfettered access to guns and that's what prompted this whole thing."

"There is no reason that any person should be able to own a gun like that."

And perhaps the most common of all:

"We need to just get rid of all guns so this sort of thing can't happen again."

But there's a big problem with those statements: They all shift the blame to something other than the individual responsible for carrying out such atrocities.

People like you and I already know and acknowledge that these tragic events are intentional acts committed by men and women who don't care at all for precious human life. We hold the perpetrators of these acts accountable, focusing on the things that drove them to such evil instead of the tools they used to carry out their crimes.

Because we have already been enlightened by the truth, I believe that we, responsibly armed Americans, have a duty — especially in the face of events such as these — to respond to inaccurate and cruel statements about guns, concealed carry, the 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Amendment or anything else about which we're knowledgeable and which can direct this important conversation in a truthful way.

We must never allow our emotions to override logic. We must never be cruel. We must respond, as best we can, with the facts.

And we must not — we cannot! — live our lives in fear.

We must transform our fear — our disgust and anger and sadness — into action. Into preparedness.

We must also demand an answer to another really important question:

When will we be allowed to defend our most precious resources?

Students and teachers — in elementary schools all the way up to colleges — have been taught to "lock down." To hide in closets and behind desks. To wait as seconds turn to minutes (and what must seem like forever) for help to arrive.

Concealed Carry Magazine Executive Editor Kevin Michalowski wrote something about Aaron Feis, the brave football coach at Parkland High School who stepped in front of students when the bullets started flying, that really hit home:

"All he could do was use his body as a shield. Image what he could have done if he was allowed to shoot back at the killer."

Let's get rid of gun-free zones. Let's start arming and training our willing teachers.

It's time we stopped allowing our legislators to decide how much human lives — especially our children's — are worth. The answer is simple. They're worth everything.

Take Care and Stay Safe,

About a month and a half ago, I reached out to you for a little help.

You may recall that Concealed Carry Magazine was in the running for a pretty prestigious award from the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME). Two of our best issues of 2017 — our May/June "Comfort & Style" issue and our August/September "Concealed Carry Lifestyle" issue — were up against such big names as National Geographic, Newsweek, TIME, Glamour, ESPN, The Atlantic and GQ in ASME's "Best Cover Contest."

Now, besides the obvious honor of sharing the stage with such well-known and respected publications, Concealed Carry Magazine being showcased at ALL was a pretty big deal. You see, in places like LA and New York, where many of these publications originate and where the voting for these types of contests usually take place, guns aren't exactly looked upon favorably.

Of course, we expected some opposition to our covers and to our magazine. In fact, take a look at one of the comments posted on ASME's Facebook page regarding the contest:

You include Concealed Carry Magazine for gun nuts and violence fetishists? Are you serious, ASME? -Christine

As it turned out, only 13 people "liked" Christine's comment, while more than 3,000 of our supporters "liked" our covers! Here's what some of THOSE folks had to say:

One of my favorite magazine covers EVER. -Denny

Nice use of black and white with just enough color to make it interesting. Best cover design of the bunch. -Tom

The colors and shadows are striking. I mostly appreciate the man's face — looking forward with calm confidence. This symbolizes the concealed carry lifestyle to me. -John

Great cover. The photo 'bleeds' all the way to the top and bottom and the content of the photo tells a story. Great shot, great layout, great magazine. -John

Comment after comment rolled in, expressing respect, admiration and support for not only our amazing covers but also for the content within Concealed Carry Magazine — and the USCCA:

Absolutely love the magazine, the USCCA and the amazing content inside each issue. -Charles

I read Concealed Carry Magazine from cover to cover not once but several times as I wait for the next issue. Then I share with friends and family. -Roman

Really appreciate the thought-provoking articles that encourage me to contemplate my responsibility to exercise my 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] Amendment rights judiciously. - Janos

This is the only magazine I read cover to cover every time I receive it. It's also the only magazine that I keep for future reference and to share. -Lillie

Concealed Carry Magazine is always full of great information for all levels of skill and involvement. The cover art is always top notch too! What is most important is that USCCA is there for its members in times of need. -Jack

As I read through these comments, I was overcome with such gratitude; it became apparent rather quickly that CCM is a staple in many, many people's lives. Wow.

The results of ASME's contest were announced earlier this month, and I'm honored to report that our "Comfort & Style" issue placed in the Top 5 of more than 200 entries (Entertainment Weekly, Billboard, Living Bird and National Geographic rounded out the publications with the most votes). Even more exciting? We ending up WINNING our category (Best Service and Lifestyle). The way I see it, this is just further proof that Concealed Carry Magazine really is the No. 1 Resource for Responsibly Armed Americans.

I couldn't be more proud.

On behalf of the entire Concealed Carry Magazine team, THANK YOU for your support.

Take Care and Stay Safe,

Tim Schmidt

If there is one thing on which I think we can all agree — especially as of late — it's that human beings are fallible; capable of making mistakes. (Now, whether such mistakes are simple accidents or the results of negligence is often up for debate.)

In the aftermath of the tragic Parkland, Florida, school shooting, multiple reports — yet to be confirmed as either speculation or truth — of gross inaction by school officials, the FBI and even law enforcement officers responding to the scene have shaken many of us to the core and raised a lot of doubts about our collective ability to stop these sorts of terrible events.

Although the perpetrator in this incident was 100 percent responsible for his actions, others' failure to act on legitimate information before — and even during — his rampage clearly had devastating implications.

Now, I hope you won't misconstrue this as me pointing fingers or placing blame on ANYONE besides the malicious, vile human being who carried out this act of violence against an entire building of innocents.

This is not a commentary on the shortcomings of law enforcement or the FBI or even our school administrators but rather an honest acknowledgment of their limitations. After all, if these folks — overwhelmingly the "good guys" — can't always be counted on to act in the face of danger (and in the name of both duty and safety), who can we count on?

The answer seems pretty straightforward to me:

We can count on ourselves — responsibly armed Americans.

See, the limitations of law enforcement — and others — are EXACTLY why it's so important that we have good guys and gals with guns.

Those limitations are EXACTLY why we absolutely, positively, 100 percent must be able to defend ourselves and those we love.

We must hold others accountable for their actions (or inaction), of course, but ultimately, WE are responsible for our own safety.

Please, take the time to establish and build relationships with your local law enforcement officers, school administrators and representatives and help them understand the importance of our right to keep and bear arms.

And remember: For every individual who is unable or unwilling to act, there is another individual who is capable — and ready. Let us each strive to always be the latter.

Take Care and Stay Safe,

Tim Schmidt

Boy, am I looking forward to spring...

For starters, we just got hit with another round of snow here in West Bend, Wisconsin, and my patience with Old Man Winter is wearing pretty thin. Longer days full of sunshine just can't come soon enough. Of course, the main reason I'm so excited for the next month or so to pass by is that the 4[SUP]th[/SUP] Annual Concealed Carry Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, is right around the corner.

Although it's been several years, it seems like only yesterday that we were planning for our very first Expo just a few miles down the road from USCCA Headquarters. More than 3,000 responsibly armed Americans attended that event back in 2015, and, since then, we've experienced considerable growth: About 5,000 responsible American gun owners joined us in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2016, and even more came out to see us in Fort Worth, Texas, last year.

We also went from 61 exhibitors at our inaugural event in West Bend to more than 100 exhibitors in 2017. Each year, it seems, the available vendor space gets snatched up more and more quickly.

Of course, the USCCA Expo is more than just a gathering of top exhibitors and a collection of firearms and concealed carry products; it's also a celebration of the responsibility and accountability that accompany the decision to carry a firearm for self-defense.

If you're available April 13-15, 2018, I'd love for you to join me and the rest of the USCCA team in Louisville. I guarantee you'll be among friends.

I'm excited to announce that our mobile Live-Fire Shooting Range, where you can test out a plethora of quality firearms from the industry's top manufacturers (such as Bond Arms, Glock and Walther Arms), is FREE for all attendees. If you're over 18, stop by and choose a gun to test-fire with the helpful guidance of USCCA-Certified Firearms Instructors.

I also encourage you to check out our Reality-Based Training Center; it too is FREE this year. We've once again partnered with Ultimate Training Munitions to provide you with everything you need to take down targets on the dedicated range or in the unique shoot house. USCCA- and UTM-Certified Instructors will be on hand to guide you through.

Of course, we'll have plenty of vendors and seminars to keep you busy throughout the weekend. Dave Young, Rob Pincus, Anthony Lambert and other self-defense and firearms experts are all slated to appear. (I'm personally looking forward to "Lessons Learned from Watching 12,000 Gunfights" from John Correia.)

Oh, and more good news: The Women's Concealed Carry Showroom will be open again this year — this time conveniently located right on the main show floor.

Doors open Friday, April 13 at 3 p.m. Will I see YOU there? I hope so!

Take Care and Stay Safe,

Tim Schmidt
