Whats with new cars with auto/manual transmissions
agreed, we should narrow it down if you wanted to get into the nitty gritty of each tranny, but i would still take a standard over any of them, yeah it sucks in the city, but if your racing or just cruising on the highway its better
What about VW/Audi's DSG?

I think the standard will be around until those people who enjoy complete control of their machine no longer exist, whenever that may be. The enjoyment and skill of engaging a standard at precisely the right time is much more rewarding than anything auto has to offer.
Honestly I think manual transmissions with the clutch pedal put the driver in better control of the car and makes the driver pay more attention to their driving. It gives a sense of ownership on the road.

I see people out there spending money on the car to improve it … If you spend half that effort just working on your driving skills, making you and the car work together as a team, then you’ll go faster – period. To make the car go a second faster on the track takes a lot more energy and money than making yourself drive it one second faster.

You won't see traditional manual trans disappearing anytime soon, as the cost for producing them is very low.
More importantly the cost for repairing them is WAY lower.
Unfortunately the demand for them is also low.
Everytime I walk through some parking lot I look to see if the 'Vette, Mustang, or whatever performance car I'm passing is a manual or not.
90% of the time I'm sadly dissapointed

I would have to drive a car with the smg or something. I know that the auto with paddle shifers kinda sucks. Mostly because its not instant responce like when my 5spd car is in a gear. I would think that is the torque converter. Also, could the smg be auto or manual, or do you always have to manually shift it.
I would keep a manual any day!!!
less wiring, less computer shit and you are in control of the car.
TIM TIM TIM a smg is a manual auto kinda thing. on the bmw's like the 05 M3 (just crazy fun to drive) it has a shifter like a manual but you jsut move it up and down like shiftronics. but...... there is no park, or drive shit. i think it only has R, N, +/-.... takes a bit to get used to but its really fun (no clutch peddle)
the coolest thing about the BMW set up is that you can set the clutch to shift as fast or as slow as you want
but in the end. ill take a 4,5, or 6 speed anyday, just makes me feel more in control and besides. my girl likes playing with my shifter

So it cant shift for you, that is still ok. I think I would actually rather the SMG. Of course I would still need to drive it first to make sure it feels he way i want it to but if it feels the same as a regular manual just wthout the clutch, im all for it.
