Dont care. I want to drive my car, not just "come along for the ride," as if by accident

for shizzle?
maybe i'm thinking of the older cars which had the sequential gearbox and clutch
and you can control the power with it, you can be in X gear and feather, or completely take power away if need-be, i guess if you're going balls out its irrelevant, i don't know

Wait wait wait..... you guys are confusing automatic transmission with paddle shifters with Full manual transmissions with paddle shifters.
They are completely different and share NOTHING in common.
Automatic transmissions with paddle shifters are automatic transmissions. they still have a torque converter with clutch packs and bands.
Manual transmissions use a clutch just like a normal manual.
The M3 comes with 2 transmission choices. Both manual, One SMG. They both use the SAME transmission and SAME clutch. The SMG uses a hydrolic pump to push in the clutch, instead of using a manual pedal.

Its all managed by computers now, but they can still drop the clutch and smoke the tires, I saw it done in a video where hondas F1 team raced thier WSB 1000RR in a drag race; the computer for the lanuch control went out and the driver had to manually launch the car.
and the car shifts by hydralic acutators, its a bit different than your standard Automanual gear box. Especially since its a straight cut sequential unit. Its kinda like in Sport bike racing they can up shift by a button that controls the shift lever using a numatic cylinder while disengaging the ignition, but they still have to down shift manually.
I'm a tradionalist and prefer a standard, but the new transmissions on some of the new cars are getting to be really bad ass.

Cars like the E46 M3 with the SMG and paddle shifters are cool, but in turns, the paddles are pretty much useless. Also, the SMG I drove felt like a girl was operating the clutch for me...sloppy, wrong, and miss-timed. I actually prefer the Z4 auto with the paddle shifters in that in my experience, it shifts faster, more smoothly, and just all around better.
When I have it in S5 or S6, and I am not careful, my passengers complain its shifting too hard.
The SMG can be adjusted to shift fast (S6) to verrry slow and easy (S1) If the car felt sloppy to you you probably had it in a very low setting.
If I remember right, you said you only took it around the block. Many people that take the car around the block may say the same thing you did. There is a learning curve to the SMG.
