from the 16 pertinant observations.
#2. wow six motors before he realized they werent strong enough to build.
#5. a thinner head gasket ups his compression from 7.5 to 8.0. wow again. obviously this guy is not very smart and has no business building a motor. no wonder he blew six.

uhh. yeah.

slap in some apexi 280 cams and rev them to 8500 with stock valve springs AND HLA !
now that i shut them up

with stock rocker arms too, riiiiiggghhhtttt?...so who did you shut up??

and i should certainly hope a square 2.0 should be able to rev to AT LEAST 7500 without modification, not 7500 being the most it can rev without modding...8000 SAFELY in a 4G all day baby, BONE STOCK!

i agree with joe, this started as a good discussion until you brought into account the car behind the motor, the motor itself is what was in question, not the driveline behind it, hell, if i want i can put a 4G63 in a starion and use a Toyota W58 tranny that i can get at a junk yard for $50 a pop (yes, you really can, and yes, its been done, by ALOT of people) then whaddya got...an easy to replace tranny/driveline, a fun RWD car..and the SUPERIOR motor ...also i've seen many an SR leak oil, it all depends on the user of the motor, i have never had problems with leaking oil, just the occasional bad stock turbo burning it up ...and 4G63's still sound better

I don't see why the cars the engines are in from the factory matter in a "Best Engine" debate. OK, so some people don't like the AWD layout of a DSM, some don't like the FWD of an SRT-4, who gives a shit? How about swapping them all into a Caterham 7 to level the playing field, if you need to muddy the waters.

I'm going to say it's a tie between the SR20, 4G63, and 3S. They can all put out ridiculous power and they all have their advantages and disadvantages.

As for the 4G63 rev issue- I have read many accounts from reliable sources of running to 8500 rpm on the factory stock valvetrain with no problems. I've communicated with a guy running to 8800 with aftermarket cams being the only reason for lifting the valve cover, no problems, no signs that the valvetrain can't take it. Probably the only thing making it difficult is the dsm tranny- but this isn't a comparison of transmissions, it's an engine comparison.

Whats the production run of the SR compared to the 4G63 in numbers built? I'm curious.

I dunno it just seems also that there is far more aftermarket in japan for the SR20 (4G has an advantage in the states due to the motor actually making it here). If i'm wrong explain...
