EJ22T from a 91-94 Legacy T or the EJ20 from a 96-99 STi Type R Spec C ... both are pretty damn awesome..
EJ22T is the strongest block subaru built..it was used in the famed 22B and will run 30 psi and spin 8K + from the factory all day long.
Neither has had much fame here in the us.. but the rest of the world.. expesically in asia recognises them as some of the best engines aorund.
WRX/Sti didnt with car of the decade in the 90's for no reason.

4G63, SR20DET, F20C, EJ22T

As for the drift comment, not to get off track here, but don't knock it til you try it. While its not my personal thing, there's a lot more to it than you think and than you mentioned. There is a ton of skill involved, and have a reliable engine is a MUST. Even more important is response. Spending lots of time at 7500 (practically constantly) with very little breaks from it is extremely taxing to a motor. Given the fact the SR is a closed deck, aluminum block, this also gives it an advantage for cooling purposes.
I agree that drifting takes a lot of skill. I also can agree that reliability is a concern. But it doesnt take the Best 4 CYL of all time to accel at drifting and be fun.
Nearly all the parts available in Japan for this motor are now imported and available next day through your favorite tuners, and those not in the states can be had in less than a week. Lastly, our dealers aren't called "satan"
Hell, Nismo is here in the US, where is RalliArt?
Ha, I'm not trying to generalize here by the way. I'm not trying to put anyone or anything down. Just havin fun. I think the 240SX and the SR20DET motor make for a great car. Just tryin to figure out the answer to the question at hand.
By the way, 800 HP on a stock 2.3 ford is nice, but the Mitsu motor has seen 975 HP on the stock block and crank. Lots of people are making 800.
This is a good discussion.
4g63 is far more reliable than a sr20.
sr20 has two huge shortcomings.
open deck block
horrible valvetrain design.
john sheppard showed 11.500 rpm on the aem logger on a mis shift. no valvetrain damage.
people who praise sr20 motors really just dont know enough about 4g63.

4g's suck, ive helped rebuild one and the quality of the parts and engineering suck. honda motors are good for commuting, no real tq potential, and i havent personally dealt with the sr20's but they seem pretty good. but hands down the 3sgte is best.
