Pitt bull thread from off topic
This is from a pro-APBT website, so I am not sure how unbiased the info is, but it does provide some compelling statistics.
http://pitbullregistry.com/unwarante...e%20stigma.htm
When looking at pitbull attacks vs. others you have to realize that our news media is an entertainment industry and therefore gives the public what they want to see. Just like a few years ago when every other day the news was reporting shark attacks, when in fact the numbers were the on par with previous and now subsequent years. The media responded to the public demand for shark attacks and therefore, sought out what are normally local stories and turned them into national news. Pitbull attacks get viewers, pomeranian attacks, probably not so much.
Also, attacks #s need to be looked at with consideration to the actual population #s and other environmental factors involved.
If you have a population of 200,000 Presa Canarios and they kill 5 people in 10 years, and then you have a population of 2,000,000 pitbull or "pitbull type" dogs that kill 20 people in 10 years, which do you consider the "dangerous breed"?
Just like with guns, the chances of being shot or attacked by a pitbull are statistically greater in certain geographic areas because 1) There are more violent crimes 2) There are more pitbulls 3) Both the guns and pitbulls are status symbols (of violence) within these areas. 4) A larger number of both gun/pitbull owners are irresponsible owners in these areas.

later in the year when we move I plan on finding myself a good lab or retriever for when I go duck hunting. till then I will keep trying to hey my illegal fish.
all bullshitting aside I don't think that pits should be an object of genocide solely because of what name they have received by their owners. most pit owners cry the media portrays the pit as a killer menace but theirs is always a gentle animal, but many stories start out with he was never an aggressive dog. their is no dispute that when they snap for what ever reason they kill or come close to it. I have seen them crush the skulls of smaller animals, imagine that was your child's body.
I wouldn't mind getting another chow but won't because I know how mine was with strangers and was highly defensive around them. not the type of animal I trust around my kids.
some animals need to be clarified as a threat and unfortunately in many peoples eyes the pit bill has made it to that point because of irresponsible owners and the media showing the aftermath of the attacks. I don't blame people pushing for a ban or strict sidelines for ownership. homeowners insurance companies have already shown they know the wrath certain breeds can cause and will not cover them, yet there is no put cry they choose to discriminate certain breeds.
the home owners association where I am working this morning has a weight limit for dogs allowed and a banned list that includes pits, rots, chow, boxers, and a few others. why because research and data has been shown that they can cause damage to our frail human bodies when (not if) they have a bad day. in one of my training classes for patrolling they taught how felons in the hood keep pits to attack people since they can't have weapons and a dog is completely legal.
they're still animals that no matter how domesticated you as an owner think you have them, can revert back to their inbred nature....... oh what were pits need and designed for again? definitely wasn't cattle herding.
and for everyone of you who claim to be a perfectly responsible owner of a put, bravo there's 25 dirtbags to make you look bad. if you spent half the time you spend defending the breed of your dog and spent that time finding solutions that would not allow those who give them a bad name to own them.
as with many invasive species of animal and animals deemed dangerous, one has to have a special permit to own them. now just having to go through all that how many of these shitheads would still try to keep their dogs? or if the state mandated that the animals must be housed a certain way, not just on a big ass chain in your back yard, how may would comply and not lose their dogs?
you problem isn't with the media or others who wish to ban them, its with a lack of rules in place to keep honest owners put of the crosshairs. and the only way to do that is with restrictions, legislation, and possibly a ban.
guns don't kill people, the people behind them do. yet all gun owners are lumped with those who illegal use firearms or illegally purchase them. is that the responsible owners fault?
fast cars street racing can cause fatalities(just look at the rotating banner above), but its not the cars doing it its the driver. yet all owners of cars that fit that image are seen as street racing punks. who do you blame, those who stereotype you or those who give you a bad name?
take the time to listen to the other side and don't
just lash put at them because you disagree with their view your pet is a potential hazard. someone tried using bite stats to show pits weren't the most biting breed, but what does that stat entail? just a nip or actually having to get stitched up? and to the nationwide average of deaths per year, that was over how many years? and how long have they truly logged the breeds? growing up in south louisiana I can say I never saw on the news or in the paper an attack till we moved down here in '89.
and lastly since it is such an old breed and popular, why is it not recognized by the american kennel club?
AKC doesnt cover all breeds....not a very good organization for a dog owner to trust anyway, many have taken thier breeds elsewhere. I personally wouldnt trust the accuaracy of papers on a bloodline that uses that organization
I was leaning under the hood, I heard all sorts of screaming and, "Nooooo, Nooooo, Nooooo. I stood up and walked around the car so I could see past the front of my neighbor's house. What I saw was 2 Am Staff's (walks like a duck, quacks like a duck...probably a duck) running full speed next to my neighbor's house straight at me. I wheeled around and tried to get to my dog but didn't get there in time. They were on her like stink on shit. One had her by the chest and the other one had her by the hind quarters and they were shaking the hell out of her. The owner's mother arrived and started pulling on one, I straddled the one that had my dog's hind quarters. I grabbed it by the throat with both hands, rared back as far and as hard as I could and started squeezing as hard as I could. I squeezed untill I only saw whites in the dogs eyes. I let go, thinking it was out or dead and started for the other one. He was neither out nor dead. He managed to get in a few good chomps to my hands and went looking for my dog again. While I was choking the one dog, my neighbor had heard the racket and charged out of the house and had wailed on the back of the other dog's head with something tha had momentarily stunned the dog. My neighbor had scooped up my dog and haad thrown her into the house and was yelling for me to make a run for it. We both got into the house and slammed the door. When things cleared out, my neighbor hauled my butt to the emergency room for some embroidery work and my wife took the Westie to the emergency vett. The dog had several broken ribs and a bout a zillion puncture wounds. She had tubes sticking out all over her, blood inside her eyeballs and in general just fucked up. She never did fully recover and died about a year later.
Some neighbors called the cops but nothing much ever happened. We found that the dogs had previously gotten out and had attacked a dog in it's yard at the other end of our block. They had also knocked down and chewed up my neighbor across the street and one house down on another occasion. She was trying to protect her Yorkie from them and managed to get to her car and throw the Yorkie inside. In that case, at least, the cops were called again and a report was made, complete with photos. The report and photos were somehow missplaced and nothing ever came of that incident.
The two dog's owner never cam to my house to see how my dog and I were doing so I went to her house and asked that she cover my medical and vet bills. She refused saying that she couldn't afford it. She could afford to own 3 Am Staff's but coulldn't afford to cover their damages. Nice. Anyway, after a long process, it bacame apparent that there wasn't much I could do. So, I told her that if I ever saw her dogs out of their yard again that I would kill them, plain and simple. For about a month after that, I had my gun loaded and just inside the front door. I had a bayonette at the back garage door and my machete at the front garage door. Every day when she came home from work, I made it a point to be leaning on my car in the driveway, facing her direction and sharpening my machete. I never said another word to her. About a month after the incident, she sold her house and moved. She's someone else's problem now.
Sooo, no, the dogs didn't specifically attack me, they went for my dog. All my injuries came as a result of me trying to protect my dog. I don't hate all pits, Am Staff's or what have you. These are the only 2 dogs I want to kill. If I ever find out where they live now, they are still on my hit list.
Long and probably somewhat incoherent but, you asked.

That would be me. OK, it was a nice Sunny and warm Saturday. I was out in the driveway working on my global warming Mustang. My Westie (actually my wife's) was lying in the grass beside the drive watching the world go by.

I pack heat anywhere I go, I love Pits but I would have killed that dog.

I blame that owner for not controling there dog.

Oh, no doubt that was the owner's fault. The dogs were ruined by the owner and her boyfriend and should have been put down long ago. I've been outside at dark thirty in the morning getting ready to head out for work when her boyfriend would have one or mor of the dogs out front. If he saw a cat, he would sick the dogs on them. By the time he moved out, the little 5 foot tall chick had no chance of controling them. Like I said, I have nothing against the breed per se. But these two are a different story. It's personal. Whether it was their fault or the owner's fault, the end result is the same.
Oh, antifreeze, while effective, would not be up close and personal enough. Besides, there could be collateral damage and that wouldn't do. This would require some actual hands on for a successful resolution.

DrDirt, I'm sorry to hear about your experience. Yeah it was long, but I was actually wanting to hear from those who've PERSONALLY experienced Pitbull (or mixed Pits) attack incidents. I do understand that Pits can DEFINITELY be aggressive, especially towards other animals, however I have no doubt that a responsible owner can atleast greatly reduce the risks of an attack, whether it be on a person or an animal.
Dr. Dirt, you have only confirmed what many others have been saying for a LONG time. Pits aren't HUMAN aggressive, but they ARE dog or other animal aggressive. In your instance, the two Am Staffs were getting aggressive toward your wife's westie. You interfered (rightfully so) and got injured in the process. It's a wonder you weren't more severely injured. But the fact remains that if you had not interfered, you most likely would not have been harmed in any way. The dogs didn't attack YOU until you got in the middle of it. Had you stood by (which I wouldn't have done either) they probably wouldn't have looked at you twice.
So, the Am Staffs didn't attack YOU....They attacked your wife's dog, and you involved yourself and got hurt in the process. There is a BIG difference. Now, had you been working on the car alone, and no other dog around you, and theyran over and started chomping on your leg, then THAT would be a human attack.

Yeah, thats pretty much how it goes. Pitts will pretty much mutilate any other animal they come across, and NORMALLY that would involve humans as well, but since they're domesticated animals they recognize humans as their providers and generally don't bite the hand that feeds...except in DrDirt's case.
At any rate, the owners in Dirt's story were stupid asses and deserve to be fined for their stupidity. And people who own those kinds of dogs need to have a gun handy; the dog gets out of control they need to put a bullet in it immediately. Although, if that were the case, you'd see almost no pitbulls left anyways.
