Looking Good

We are close to completing our upgrade on our Street Glide forks. Both left and right side fork assemblies have been reassembled per factory and manufacturers specifications. Our completed assemblies have Performance Machine chrome lower sliders and Progressive Suspension’s FST (frequency sensing technology) monotube cartridge lowering kit.
Triple Threat

The Street Glide forks and the motorcycle are going to look amazing and it is going to handle better than any and all stock Harley Touring models. We have used a combination of parts from three excellent American companies. All parts were engineered to fit and function together seamlessly.
Before installing the Street Glide forks into the upper and lower trees, the new Performance Machine bells need to be installed. The factory hardware is prepped with a little blue Loctite and reused to secure these new, chrome bells to the bottom of the lower tree.
It is a good idea to have a second set of hands available when installing the fork assemblies onto the motorcycle. Slide the fork tubes through the trees until they are in their correct position within the trees. Both sides need to protrude the same, equal distance through the top tree. To do this, you can either use a visual method or measurement method:
Visual method: set the fork height so that the top rear surface of the upper fork bracket is midway of the tapered area at top of fork.
Measurement method: Set top of fork to a measurement of 8.695 +/- .060 in from the top, rear of the lower fork bracket.
Evenly tighten the two lower, and one upper pinch bolts. Finally, tighten the hardware to 14 to 18 foot pounds. Next, we will be reinstalling the front fender, front wheel, front calipers and lower bezel. Looking forward to seeing this m/c on two wheels and leaning on its kickstand.

[h=1]Steering Neck Adjustment[/h] My Question to y’all, do you think it is reasonable to be charged for a Steering Neck Adjustment at 5,000 miles, (instead of warranty claim)? All the HD Touring service manuals state to lubricate at 1k, 10k and 20k and an adjustment isn’t even needed till 25,000 miles. I took it in due to some knocking in the steering neck area to Mancuso Harley, Houston and they just called to tell me the “steering neck adjustment” would be $125 and that he checked with Harley and they wouldn’t cover it because it’s a wear item. A steering neck adjustment is a wear item at 5,000 miles? Thanks for any advice and comments….BUT I’m on my way to pick it up NOW.

Hi Don. I myself would contact someone at h/d about this dealers practice. No I do not think this is reasonable, but if 125 dollars corrects the problem it may be worth it. Years ago h/d had a rash of steering bearings that would settle in the frame and races and cause clunking or banging. I was in the dealer at the time and we warranted many of these motorcycles. It was time consuming but all were covered under warranty. -Wrench Safe, FMH


UPDATE FROM ONE OF OUR USERS:
Dennis, saw the bit from Don S. about the knocking noise and the dealer’s Steering Neck Adjustment. I too had a case where I got a knock once in awhile (got a ’99 Road King). What I found was that the main nut at the top of the forks was about 1/8 turn loose. Found too that the lock plate with the tabs that need to be bent up against the nut weren’t, they were flat against the base. I guess that allowed the nut to get loose. I tightened up the nut, folded the tabs against the nut, and the knock went away. Just passing along FYI in case it’s helpful.

The Desperado and The Drifter


This isn’t the name of a Cowboy movie or even a country duo. These are the names of some of the most popular saddlebags for Harleys. The Saddlemen Desperado and Drifter lines of bags can be seen on Harleys across the country and it’s because they look great, are durable and can pack what you need with ease.

Saddlebags are the easiest way to carry what you need on your bike and the Saddlemen offerings are as good as gets in that category. When you choose either the Desperado or Drifter, you are getting the bags that set the standard in motorcycle luggage. To add a little flash, choose the Desperado line. The Desperado bags feature chrome studs and conchos to add some shine. The Drifter bags are sans conchos and chrome studs to provide a more clean and sleek look. Upkeep on with the Saddlemen Drifter and Desperado saddlebags is fairly simple, in fact. A damp cloth will do the trick almost all of the time. You also don’t have to worry about the SaddleHyde fading in the sun after prolonged exposure. The rigid construction of the bag will allow it to hold its shape, whether the bag is packed to the rim or while it is completely empty. You don’t have to worry about the bags being saggy when empty or bulging when packed. In other words, they are going to look great no matter what.

Because the saddlebags are a bike specific fitment, you can be sure that they will not only look like they belong on the bike, but that installation is as straightforward as it gets. When you get the standard bags, the only modification that you may need to make is relocating the turn signals. The saddlebags with built in LED marker lamps will require a bit more work, but can still be done by just about anyone. You simply install the mounting hardware to the fender struts and you are good to go. The bags come with everything that you need to fit them onto your specific Harley.

The ease of use is another huge feature that riders love. Saddlemen uses QTL (Quarter Turn Locking) pins to attach the bags to the mounting hardware. This lets you quickly and easily remove the bags from the bike. Plus there are handles on each bag to carry them wherever you need to.


Practicality and style are joined together at the buckles as well. Hidden under the great looking straps are lockable buckles that make opening and closing the bags easy. And because the bags can only be removed from the inside, theft is greatly deterred when the buckles are locked.
