Default Sticks and Stones and Bullets

Sticks and Stones and Bullets

By Rick Sapp // 11/16/2018
Remember the saying “sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me?” It isn’t true. Just look to the “North to the Future” state for an example.Alaskan Lt. Gov. Byron Mallott has resigned “due to inappropriate comments,” wrote the Anchorage Daily News. “Details about what Mallott said, and to whom, were not immediately clear, though Gov. [Bill] Walker described the remarks as inappropriate overtures to a woman earlier this week.”In today’s politically correct climate, “inappropriate overtures” may have been something as simple as holding a door open for a woman or saying, “Yes, ma’am.”For us gun owners and concealed carry promoters, the point is that our words — written and spoken — carry the potential for bruising court testimony if we’re ever arrested as a result of a self-defense incident.I’m often guilty on this score; I sometimes pop off about head shots on Facebook or “like” the videos of cops saving themselves, even if it involves deadly force.
On any given morning, an Apple store will be thronged with customers whose only desire is to have a million followers “like” their posts.
Sure, every now and then I go too far with injudicious commentary on social media. But should I wipe my Facebook and Twitter accounts? Should I censor my speech and opinions, goofy as they sometimes are?If I’m ever taken to court as a result of defensive shooting, I’m concerned that a clever attorney for the dead perp’s family might hold these things up and say, “This guy had a propensity to violence. He was ‘locked and loaded’ and ready to shoot someone. Therefore he, not the man he shot in supposed self-defense, is to blame.”Words matter, and, in the aftermath of a self-defense situation, we might be happy that we exercised a judicious approach to online commentary. The world is watching … and listening. Sticks and stones…

7 Reasons Why Responsible Gun Owners Are Joining the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA)

By USCCA // 11/27/2018
The United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA) is a membership organization that provides the most comprehensive self-defense education, training and legal protection available to responsibly armed Americans. We are fiercely committed to your freedom and independence and work tirelessly to protect both.If you own a gun for self-defense, you need another layer of protection. USCCA Membership is different than CCW insurance or concealed carry insurance in that it will give you the self-defense education, training and legal protection you need as a responsible gun owner. You’ll secure access to the finest community of like-minded Americans, award-winning service and a bulletproof guarantee. You won’t receive that kind of value from CCW insurance. Talk to fellow USCCA members. They will tell you there is no better way to protect yourself and get peace of mind. The following are just a few of the most popular benefits of USCCA Membership.

1. Legal Protection When You Need It Most

We all prepare for the worst while hoping for the best. No one wants to wind up in a situation where the only recourse is violent self-defense with a gun or otherwise — but it happens. The USCCA exists to guide and support responsibly armed Americans just like you through the scary and overwhelming aftermath of a self-defense incident. When you call the Self-Defense SHIELD emergency hotline, you will be aided by a compassionate and knowledgeable professional who will assist in the aftermath of a self-defense incident and, if necessary, provide resources to obtain legal representation. Almost as importantly, he or she will help reassure you during this stressful time and will stick with you through the whole process. A concealed carry insurance company may simply provide you with a card and phone number. The USCCA launched its revolutionary Self-Defense SHIELD program in 2012, recognizing that even good guys and gals who do the right thing by defending themselves and their loved ones can experience all-new struggles in the courtroom. This comprehensive financial and legal protection benefit is an integral part of every USCCA Membership, providing support to members when they need it most. Monetary limits represent a per-incident cap and not a restriction based per annum or by length of membership.
  • Sleep better at night knowing you have access to up to $2,250,000 in protection* that covers your self-defense use of ANY legal weapon — including your gun.
  • Enjoy peace of mind knowing the Critical Response Team is just one call away — 24/7/365 — to walk you through the aftermath of a self-defense incident.
  • Have the freedom to choose your own attorney, or simply choose one with experience in firearms and self-defense case law from the USCCA Attorney Network.

Gold Membership Legal Protection Benefits*

  • $500,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for civil defense and damages
  • $100,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for criminal defense, bail bond funding and attorney retainer
  • 24/7/365 Critical Response Team
  • Your choice of attorney or access to USCCA Attorney Network
  • Protection for use of all legal weapons of opportunity, including up-front funding for criminal defense and bail bonds

Platinum Membership Legal Protection Benefits*

  • $1,000,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for civil defense and damages
  • $150,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for criminal defense, bail bond funding and attorney retainer
  • 24/7/365 Critical Response Team
  • Your choice of attorney or access to USCCA Attorney Network
  • Protection for use of all legal weapons of opportunity, including up-front funding for criminal defense and bail bonds

Elite Membership Legal Protection Benefits*

  • $2,000,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for civil defense and damages
  • $250,000 in Self-Defense SHIELD protection for criminal defense, bail bond funding and attorney retainer
  • 24/7/365 Critical Response Team
  • Your choice of attorney or access to USCCA Attorney Network
  • Protection for use of all legal weapons of opportunity, including up-front funding for criminal defense and bail bonds
*All Self-Defense Shield Protection Plan Benefit amounts are detailed more fully in, and are subject to the terms, conditions, limitations, and exclusions set forth in the Membership Agreement.

First Smoke, Then Fire

By Tom Grieve // 12/13/2018
Where there is smoke, there is fire.We have all heard the line and intuitively understand its meaning. In life, the fire creates the smoke and not the other way around. In my line of work as a former-state-prosecutor-turned-defense-attorney, however, the gunsmoke creates the legal fire. When a good person thinks about defending his or her family and loved ones, he or she too often focuses his or her time and attention only on the gear. Common concerns include which firearm to use and which ammunition to select. That’s all fine (and is, of course, very important) — we all like gear, and no one needs an excuse to purchase more firearms. However, professionals (such as police officers, prosecutors and judges) focus less on what you use and much more on how you use it. And guess what? Your jury will too.I want to turn your attention to what may be the most important conversation you ever have if you’re forced to use your firearm in self-defense: shopping for the attorney who will keep you out of prison. What is that process like? What should you prepare for? How can you prepare? Space limitations preclude a full rundown within the confines of this article, but there are a few points with which I want you to walk away.Nothing will prepare you for the raw shock of waking up and needing a criminal attorney. All the attorney websites and advertisements look and sound the same, for the most part. It is typically difficult, if not impossible, to grasp anything measurable that distinguishes Firm A from Firm B. (Advertising regulations in the industry are to blame for that.) One thing is for sure, though, as you quickly scroll through websites and reviews with a limited budget of both time and money, your freedom and/or livelihood hanging in the balance: You will regret not looking into this earlier.Let me assure you of one constant when it comes to attorneys and life: The best professionals — the ones that you and your family deserve — will never come cheap. These attorneys will also almost certainly not accept an IOU as a form of payment. Money talks, and unless you have a bank account that’s large enough to shout, you’ll need someone to do your talking for you. Enter the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA). Backed by the USCCA, you will have your pick of the litter when it comes to attorneys. But hang on … you need to stick around to hear the best part.Your defense will be spearheaded by top-tier legal talent, and if you practice what the USCCA teaches, you’ll be giving that attorney a winning hand of something that money can never buy: facts. The best attorneys cannot change what happened; they cannot change the cards in the deck. They can only spot both the good and bad cards that weaker attorneys miss, properly handle those cards in play and generally stack the deck to your maximum advantage. Never forget, however, that you are the determining factor of whether you followed the laws and employed a lawful use of force. Thanks to the abundance of training materials, discussion forums and access to industry experts (which are provided as part of membership), USCCA members learn how to avoid or de-escalate potentially dangerous situations. But if a lethal-force encounter becomes imminent, that same training can help members survive the incident and take smart steps in its aftermath. If you have never tuned in for a Live Training Broadcast; wandered the lecture halls, vendors and live-fire ranges at the national Concealed Carry Expo; or participated in the live AMA (Ask Me Anything) expert series, there is no telling how costly it may be for you and your family someday. I would strongly encourage you to take a few minutes to at least familiarize yourself with all the resources with which the USCCA arms its members.Protecting yourself with the best legal team is invaluable. Protecting your family and your future with the best training is priceless. The USCCA is here to show you the path; all you need to do is walk it.

Growth and Gratitude
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER As we wrap up another year here at the USCCA, I'm overcome by a tremendous amount of gratitude for the good, the bad, the ups and the downs (yep, even the hard times offer opportunities to learn and grow). Some really exciting changes have transpired over the last 12 months, and — as always — I'm incredibly humbled by them all.

In the spirit of tradition, I'd like to share some of the past year's milestones with you. In all honesty, they wouldn't exist without you! So, here we go ... my "Top 10" of 2018:
  1. 60 Minutes of Fame: OK, OK. My appearance wasn't that long, but in early 2018, the folks over at 60 Minutes invited me to fly out to New York for an exclusive interview. The segment, which aired in February, afforded me a national platform from which to talk about responsible gun ownership. It was a huge win for the USCCA and for responsibly armed Americans all across the country.
  2. Concealed Carry Magazine Comes Up Big Again ... and Again ... and Again: In February, Concealed Carry Magazine took home top honors in the American Society of Magazine Editors' "Readers' Choice Award" (in the "Best Service and Lifestyle" category). In March, CCM won "Best B2C Magazine" at Niche Media's annual Nichee Awards. In May, at the prestigious Milwaukee Press Club Awards, CCM brought home FOUR awards (a gold, two silvers and a bronze). And in July of 2018, we celebrated 15 years since I created the very first issue of CCM. I simply couldn't be more proud of the team that continues to produce the absolute BEST self-defense magazine out there.
  3. Concealed Carry Expo in Louisville: We held our fourth-annual Concealed Carry Expo in Louisville, Kentucky, in April, and more than 14,000 fellow patriots joined us there. How cool is that?
  4. Armed American Radio's 10th Year on Air: At the end of April 2018, Mark Walters kicked off the 10th season of Armed American Radio. Who would have thought that one of the 30,000 people on a mailing list I purchased almost 15 years ago would become such a crucial voice for the USCCA and for responsibly armed Americans everywhere? Bravo, Mark!
  5. Gold Stevie Award for Front-Line Contact Center of the Year: The USCCA beat out a lot of other big (and well-known) companies to bring home the Gold Stevie Award for "Front-Line Contact Center of the Year." I'm so proud to work with a group of people who provide the best member care on the planet. (And if you've ever called us, you already know that!)
  6. Growing Network of USCCA Instructors: 2018 was an incredibly exciting year for USCCA's Training Division. We launched new curriculum, including Women's Handgun and Self-Defense Fundamentals and Defensive Shooting Fundamentals Levels 1 & 2. We added more than 1,000 instructors to our network. And a ton of work went in to launching a new platform to help students connect to instructors all across the U.S. (Hold tight ... there are even more great things in store for 2019!)
  7. Proving Ground Video Series: In March 2018, the USCCA's Proving Ground series was named "Best Niche Use of Video" by Niche Media. I might be biased, but I think each scenario our video team creates as part of Proving Ground gets better and better (and the Live Training Broadcasts do too!). Great work, team!
  8. Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map: In November, after months of research and other tireless efforts by our team, the USCCA launched a new and exponentially improved Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map & State Gun Laws site. The response has been fantastic, and I couldn't be more excited to offer this unique, comprehensive resource to law-abiding citizens all across our great nation.
  9. Inc. 5000 — and More: Inc. Magazine named the USCCA to its "Top 5000" for the seventh year in a row! And for the third year running, Delta Defense was named one of the "Best Places to Work" by the Milwaukee Business Journal and one of the "Top Workplaces" in Southeastern Wisconsin by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I love that people love to work here.
  10. 280,000+ Responsibly Armed Americans: As we close in on 300,000 USCCA Members, I'm thrilled to say the self-defense education we offer has never been better! In 2018, we launched a cleaner, easier-to-navigate Member Dashboard and a weekly, Member-Only training video. I love that more than 280,000 good guys and gals are doing everything in their power to learn and grow and be the ultimate defenders of their families. As proven in the pages of Concealed Carry Magazine and in some of our videos, USCCA Members are SAVING LIVES. And that's really what it's all about.
So thank you. Thank you for the role you play in the USCCA story and for everything you do to make this world a better, safer place. Without you, none of the amazing things listed above would have been possible.

Take care and stay safe,

Tim Schmidt

Default Shoot Yourself … Face Charges

Shoot Yourself … Face Charges

By Kevin Michalowski // 01/04/2019
While shopping in a local Walmart on Nov. 27, 2018, an Arizona man negligently shot himself in the groin. According to local news reports, the man was carrying his handgun in the waistband of his sweatpants when it began to fall. He told police that the gun went off when he tried to reposition it. Appropriately, police found him in the meat department, and ambulance crews rushed him to the hospital. He is expected to live, but police did file charges for unlawful discharge of a firearm. This is why we can’t have nice things! I am glad this man is facing charges; he is not a responsible gun owner, and his reckless actions not only put people in danger but also give credence to the anti-gunners when they call us “irresponsible” and “dangerous.” This man was irresponsible and dangerous. Now, I’m not yelling at you. I’m yelling at your friends who do this. I’m asking you to talk to your friends and tell them to stop it. Don’t let them be so stupid. If they choose to carry a gun, you must remind them to never be lazy about it. Never. As I put this column together, I reviewed several news reports. Each one used the word “accident” or “accidental.” I choose to use the word “negligent.” This sort of thing makes me so angry because it is 100 percent preventable, and the end results are bad for everyone. These are the kinds of stupid mistakes that allow anti-gunners to chip away at our rights. This man was carrying a pistol tucked into the front of the waistband of his sweatpants! SWEATPANTS! There is a reason tucking a pistol into the front of your pants without a holster is called “felony carry.”There is so much wrong with this situation that I don’t even know where to begin. But let’s start with some concealed carry ground rules. I typically don’t step up and tell people what they must do, but in this case I think there are some absolutes.First Absolute RuleSecure your firearm! I was going to say, “Carry your gun in a holster.” But there are safe alternatives to holsters. They are not as good, but they are safe. If your friend, for whatever reason, decides that today is the day he or she won’t wear pants, for the love of all that is good and right in the world, tell that person to find an alternative carry method (or, you know, put on pants)! Let’s just say your friend wants to wear sweatpants today AND carry a gun. He could get a bellyband holster. She could get a fanny pack. He could carry in an ankle holster. She could carry in something like Thunderwear or SmartCarry. She could get a pair of that compression underwear or yoga pants with the holster pocket sewn on the hip. He could get a concealed carry T-shirt with the holster sewn under the arm. She could get a tactical pack or pouch with a gun compartment. The point is there is any number of outstanding carry systems that will allow you, I mean your friend, to carry a gun SAFELY no matter what you — er, your friend — wears. When we decide to own and carry a gun, life gets a little bit more complicated, but it is still pretty easy. To wit: Buy a carry system that secures your firearm and completely covers the trigger. One more time: Buy a carry system that secures your firearm and completely covers the trigger. If you can’t afford to buy one such system for every style of clothing you wear, then only wear the clothes that allow you to carry safely with the system you have. And while we are talking about what we can and can’t afford, if you think a good holster is expensive, consider the costs you will face following a negligent discharge: Medical bills. Legal bills. Lost wages. Civil litigation. Do you have that covered? Tell your friends. Share this story with everyone you know. This has got to stop happening.

Tell Your Kids About Gun Safety … Then Tell Them Again

By John Caile // 01/11/2019
We all hate reading about children injured or killed in incidents involving firearms. But this particular case of gun safety (technically, the lack thereof) has a disturbing twist. The headline tells the story:11-year-old charged in shooting death of 14-year-old friend“An 11-year-old Lake City boy has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of his 14-year-old friend, the Columbia Sheriff’s Office announced [Dec. 28, 2018],” News 4 JAX reported.Deputies said that “Carter and Jadon began to play wrestle to see if the family dog would respond to Carter being attacked. After that, Carter got a pistol from his parents’ room, took out the magazine and pointed it at Jadon. The gun went off, killing the teen.” (Emphasis ours. The gun did not “go off.” The boy admitted that he pulled the trigger.)

It Gets Worse

A horrible incident indeed, but even more disturbing was that, according to deputies, Carter lied, claiming self-defense by saying that Jadon “had tried to attack him with a knife.” During questioning, Carter and his brother finally admitted that they had put a kitchen knife near Jadon after the shooting.Think about that: An 11-year-old just shot his friend, and the first thing he does is plant evidence and concoct a false story? Where did he even learn to think that way? That’s a conversation for another day.

The Right Form of Gun Control

At the USCCA, we always try to learn from horrific cases like this one. First and foremost, this story tragically underscores the importance of having complete control of your firearm at all times — especially if it’s not in your immediate possession, as in this case.Leaving guns where young people, especially teenagers, can access them without adult supervision is simply bad judgement. Obviously, there are exceptions. Those who live in very rural areas, far from law enforcement services, may have to make certain concessions to ensure their children’s safety when home alone. And to be honest, we’ve all seen stories where relatively young children successfully used firearms to defend themselves and/or other family members. Some of you will also argue that “my kids are well-trained” or that “they would never touch our guns when I’m not around.” However, even if that’s true, your kids have friends, many of whom are not trained in safe firearms procedures. And remember, even the best-trained kids are still kids. When teenagers get into a group setting, wanting to impress their friends can override their training (and common sense).

Constant, Consistent and Comprehensive

That being said, comprehensive firearms education is extremely important. The boy charged in this case is a perfect example of “a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.” Like many adults, he knew just enough to remove the magazine from an auto-loading pistol but failed to eject the live round in the chamber. When you do train your children (or anyone else), make sure you cover all aspects of the safe handling of firearms. Then test them frequently to see if they remember. But no matter how responsible you believe them to be, always take the steps you deem necessary to prevent incidents like this one.Bottom line? Every home situation is different. Where you live, the type of dwelling, the number of people who share the space — all can have an impact on your safety protocols. But one thing is for certain: You must develop those protocols and do everything possible to ensure that they are followed by everyone. Safety is your responsibility … do your part.

Default Celebrating Responsibly Armed Americans in Vegas... BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER

Celebrating Responsibly Armed Americans in Vegas...
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER As I get ready to head down to Las Vegas for this year's SHOT Show (one of my all-time-favorite industry events), I'm reminded once again of all it represents:

Family. Freedom. Opportunity. Hard Work.

See, down there, no matter where you turn, you'll see more than just big-name gun manufacturers and holster makers and ammo distributors. You'll see plenty of motivated individuals — responsible, law-abiding citizens — who share a passion for firearms and for protecting their loved ones.

Each January, as I pack my bags for the shooting industry's largest trade show, I think back to my first-ever appearance at SHOT (well over a decade ago now), where I was desperately trying to spread the word — to no avail — about a brand-new little publication called Concealed Carry Magazine.

It was a humbling experience back then and, to be honest, it still is today (although perhaps for slightly different reasons).

See, if you've been part of the USCCA community for any amount of time, you're probably already familiar with my "gun show" story:

It was shortly after I had printed the very first issue of CCM. I was headed down to Las Vegas with hundreds of copies. (I had even invited my dad along to help me pass them out.) I was over-the-moon excited. I was convinced that people would be lining up to get their hands on my new magazine.

As many of my early stories go, things didn't exactly turn out as I'd planned.

People had no clue who I was or what I did. Not a single person showed any interest in Concealed Carry Magazine. I can admit it now, but that was one of the lowest, most embarrassing experiences of my entire life. In fact, I ended up leaving that first SHOT Show with nearly every single copy of the magazine that I had brought down with me.

But you know what?

It got better.

Every year, I gave away a few more copies.

Every year, a few more USCCA team members joined me down in Vegas.

And so now, each trip to SHOT reminds me how far I've come and how blessed I am to be doing something I believe in with every ounce of my being.

To be honest, I love SHOT because I look around and see other people just like me. I see men and women who believe what I believe and who want nothing more than to protect the ones they love.

I love SHOT because it serves to prove that when you find something you truly believe in — the same way, for instance, I believed in Concealed Carry Magazine — there is absolutely no limit to where that belief can take you.

Most of all, I love SHOT because it reinforces that I'm exactly where I need to be.

Default Back-to-Back Readers' Choice Awards for Concealed Carry Magazine

Back-to-Back Readers' Choice Awards for Concealed Carry Magazine
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER I called on you for help, and you DELIVERED!

For the second year in a row, Concealed Carry Magazine took home the Readers' Choice Award in the "Best Service and Lifestyle" category in the American Society of Magazine Editors' (ASME) "Best Cover Contest."

Our April 2018 "Comfort & Style" issue garnered more than 2,000 likes and was also a repeat finalist in the OVERALL "Readers' Choice Award" category! (That's pretty impressive when you consider a few of the well-known publications we were up against — TIME, The Atlantic, National Geographic, Entertainment Weekly and GQ, among MANY others.)

But that's not why I'm sitting here smiling.

I set aside about an hour to read every single comment that Concealed Carry Magazine readers took the time to share while voting for our cover. Here are just a few:

The very best member organization I have ever been aware of or been a member of, without any doubt. The USCCA magazine is a clear presentation of the professionalism of every staff member of the USCCA, and my favorite magazine of my lifetime! The USCCA magazine: Evidence of true American Patriotism! - Lynn S.

One of the only magazines I read every issue from cover to cover. - Todd V.

One of the most comprehensive sources of information regarding training, situational awareness, style choices, and personal and family protection on the market. Every issue is a cover-to-cover learning experience. Great job USCCA. - Craig B.

What a perfect cover for what the interior of this extraordinary magazine features. Always read it cover to cover and learn something with every issue. Proud to be a member of USCCA. - Lorraine M.

The ONLY magazine I read cover to cover and back again. I generally have my tablet out and navigate to advertised products for more information while I am reading. - Mark C.

Tim, awesome magazine and organization. I read the magazine cover to cover as soon as it arrives. It is also comforting to know that the USCCA has my back should the unspeakable come to pass. Keep up the good work! - Bob R.

I'm beyond humbled by the kind words and the incredible support, but more so by the heartfelt testaments to all the amazing ways CCM is helping responsibly armed Americans all across the country learn and grow as the ultimate defenders of their families.

This is such a huge win for us all. Thank you!
