A Little Advice from Concealed Carry Magazine Senior Editor Ed Combs
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER Things have been rough around here for the last week or so. Strong storms and record rainfall in many counties have prompted Governor Scott Walker to declare a state of emergency in Wisconsin. While the USCCA Headquarters has been spared the brunt of severe weather, several employees have had to find new ways to get to work because of fallen trees and washed-out roads. In some parts of the state, entire neighborhoods are underwater. I even read a story about a young boy who almost got washed away while playing in floodwaters just south of here. Scary stuff.

Anyway, I recalled that around this same time last year (flood season in the Midwest and hurricane season in other locations), I asked Concealed Carry Magazine Senior Editor Ed Combs to lend his expertise to the topic. He conveyed some great and timely advice that I thought was worth sharing again. Here's what Ed had to say:

Hurricanes and floods — and the chaos they always bring — can serve as stark reminders of why our Second Amendment rights are so important. Your firearms allow you to secure your family and your property as you get to safety, and when law enforcement is occupied with other matters, you're often required to do just that.

After the flood waters recede and you're able to return to your home, the scene is often utter devastation. Though you were able to get yourself, your loved ones and your essential supplies out in time, often the rest of your residence and the property therein is soaked ... or worse. No firearm or cartridge was designed to spend days — or even minutes — underwater, and as you put your life back together, it will be imperative that you know how to handle any guns and ammunition that you were able to salvage from a flooded building.

WHAT'S THE BEST WAY TO DRY OUT GUNS?

As soon as you can, get the firearms disassembled and begin the process of drying them out. Separate metal parts from wood and polymer, and immediately begin soaking any metal components in some kind of penetrating oil. You're not looking to "get them dry" ... you're looking to completely coat every metal part in oil. Your main goal is to drive out any water that is currently hiding in the mechanism, so you should be more concerned with getting the water out and the oil in than with perfectly detail-stripping the firearm first. Don't forget though: The polymer frames of handguns do contain small steel components, and though you will likely have to replace those small steel components if they're already rusted in place, you still need to get oil up into and through the frames of any autos or revolvers. Err on the side of oily, and don't be stingy; if you can, submerge the stripped firearm in oil of some kind to really drive out any remaining water.

The aftermath of a disaster like this isn't the time to be overly picky either. Though I would normally never use WD-40 on a firearm (it can damage the primers in ammunition), if that's the only oil available and I just fished my Smith & Wesson Model 19 out of a flooded basement, you can bet I'll be liberally hosing it down with every dad's favorite fix-all. Again, the first priority is to convert your firearms from wet to oily, and even motor oil is better than nothing for accomplishing that. Everything else can be handled later.

Polymer components usually rebound very easily from being submerged, but wood stocks are not as lucky. Resist the temptation to use a hair dryer or a heat gun on your stocks, as this will almost certainly damage them. Begin the drying process slowly, and be prepared to recondition or replace them as they dry.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AMMUNITION GETS SUBMERGED FOR DAYS ON END?

If ammunition has been submerged for more than a few seconds, it should not be fired. Water getting into the cases could result in unreliability and unsafe pressures (both low and high), so the best course of action is to sell it as damaged ammunition to be broken down into its component parts for reuse or to do so yourself. The powder and the primer in a centerfire cartridge are unreliable and unsafe after being submerged, but the case (provided it is reloadable) and the projectile are still just fine. Selling or recycling that ammo at a steep loss will be cold comfort, but it will be far better than just dropping it all off at the police department, sheriff's office or fire station to be destroyed.

WHAT IF I GET HOME AND CAN'T GET MY SAFE OPEN?

If you return to your residence and are unable to open your safe, your best move will be to contact the manufacturer before doing anything else. If it is a mechanical safe, the manufacturer should be able to walk you through the steps to best access your firearms without inflicting additional damage on them. If it is an electronic unit, the same applies. Either way, you will quickly find out what the company policy is on flood damage.

If you decide to start extracting your guns from a safe that simply cannot be opened through conventional means, the key is to go slowly. Even an inexpensive Chinese angle grinder or cut-off wheel can get you through the sides or backs of most units, but remember that doing so will bring with it fire hazards from flying sparks and, of course, dangers to eyes, ears and fingers. Whatever you decide to do, proceed with caution. Don't lose sight of the fact that property is just that: property. It is only humans who cannot be replaced.

STAY SAFE, GOD BLESS

Floods cause massive disruptions in our lives and can destroy some of the things we hold the dearest, but even my most treasured guns are not as valuable as my loved ones. If you've been affected by any of the horrendous storms that have been flogging parts of this great nation, we here at the USCCA wish you nothing but the best and are here to answer any gun-related questions you might have.

Stay safe,

Ed Combs
Senior Editor
Concealed Carry Magazine

As Ed mentioned above, guns and ammo can be replaced; people cannot. Still, it is our sincere hope here at the USCCA that you're able to salvage whatever you can after the worst has passed.

Take care and stay safe,

Tim Schmidt

Let's Roll!"
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER 17 years.

It's hard to believe it's been 17 years since that fateful September day when life changed, quite literally, for an entire nation.

With the anniversary of 9/11 — a day that shook our country to the core almost two decades ago — I have a simple thought I'd like to share with you:

It is how we respond to an event not the event itself that defines us.

Think about this for a second:

On that tragic September morning, a group of cowardly terrorists had a very singular mission: steal a handful of planes and fly those planes into populous national landmarks in order to kill as many people as possible.

But the terrorists' mission was actually much more complex than that. Their goal was to instill fear in the hearts of all Americans. To shake our sense of safety and security. To trample the spirit of our great nation.

And on that day, and in the days and weeks that followed, it felt a lot like those 19 men had succeeded. After all, we lost almost 3,000 innocent lives that day. We lost men and women, mothers and fathers, firefighters and police officers, and friends.

Our nation was indeed forever changed.

But the truth is, those terrorists failed:

They failed because they could not control how we responded to their actions. See, even in the midst of chaos, there were men and women who had the courage to act in the face of danger. Men and women who chose to run toward danger rather than away from it.

I'm thinking of Todd Beamer on Flight 93, who encompassed the sheepdog mentality when he famously shouted, "Let's roll!"

I'm thinking of the 72 law enforcement officers who answered the call to serve and protect and who gave their lives for that call.

I'm thinking of the 343 firefighters who trudged up burning flights of stairs and who, quite literally, walked through fire to save people trapped inside two doomed buildings.

I'm thinking of the 43 EMTs and paramedics who worked tirelessly to tend to those in need without thinking for even a second about themselves. They lost their lives helping others.

I'm thinking of the bakery shop owners. The 911 operators. The office managers and security guards. Men and women who, in the midst of danger, made the brave decision to act.

And I'm thinking of YOU, the responsibly armed American, who serves as absolute proof that there are people who refuse to let the spirit of this great nation die.

In the days after 9/11, our country experienced more unity — more togetherness — than perhaps any other time in history.

Yes, it was a time of great tragedy. But it was also a time of great hope. Now, each year that passes reminds us that we are strong and hopeful and blessed.

We will never forget those we lost 17 years ago. Never.

But the narrative has changed. Today, we look to the brave men and women who run toward danger instead of away from it ... and it becomes clear that we will always survive, so long as we have good people willing to fight back.

Take care and stay safe,

Tim Schmidt

Today, Kevin Michalowski and Noelle McPike tackle the issue of threatening behavior at the ATM. The first thing to consider in this scenario is choosing an ATM where your back will not be exposed to the public or an ATM you can use from your car window.

Because your back is usually turned, it can be very hard to respond to a threat. Situational awareness is really key to staying safe at an ATM and is the kind of thinking that will save your life. And remember, if you haven't seen a weapon or if a threat has not been verbalized, you are not in imminent danger and you cannot legally shoot. Default The Abundance Cycle

The Abundance Cycle
BY TIM SCHMIDT - USCCA FOUNDER The famed spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle once said that "acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance."

I couldn't agree more.

See, when I was growing up, one of the things my parents instilled in me, my brother and my sister was expressing gratitude for all that we had. My dad insisted that the more grateful we were for what we had, the more we would have to be grateful for. (As usual, my dad was right.)

My parents also taught us — through their example — how important it was to help others whenever possible.

Thus, I'll never forget the time we "adopted" a family in need. This particular family included a boy — about my age — and that boy had included a list of things he wanted for Christmas.

This should be easy, I thought to myself. Toys. Lots and lots of toys!

I'm sure you can imagine my surprise (and, honestly, embarrassment) when I saw what the boy had actually listed:

Socks. Underwear.

I could hardly believe it. Socks and underwear ... for CHRISTMAS?

These were things I didn't have to even think about. It was eye-opening and humbling to learn that someone — especially a kid — would consider these things gifts. It didn't seem right — or fair.

It was a lesson I've come back to time and time again: giving thanks for what I have, and giving to others whenever I can (even during my own hard times).

So, then:

This Thanksgiving, I'm thankful for a gracious and loving God. I'm thankful for my family. I'm thankful for our great nation, where freedom rings and where hard work is recognized AND rewarded.

I'm thankful for my natural-born right to self-defense. I'm thankful for the USCCA and its continued growth. I'm thankful for YOU and the hundreds of thousands of responsibly armed Americans all across the country who have chosen to join me in making our world a better — and safer — place.

And call me sentimental, but I'm also thankful for the goodness and hope and love that surround us all. Without those things, there would be nothing worth fighting for.

I hope you have just as much to be thankful for.

And, please, if you can, help give others something to be thankful for this year. Donate to charity. Help out at your local food pantry. Provide a meal or two for a family that doesn't have enough. Adopt a family for Christmas. I promise whatever you give will come back to you in ways you never thought possible.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Take care and stay safe,

Tim Schmidt
