Somehow I just knew it was the timing to start out with. I am sure we could have spent another long while getting it right but frustration and a loss of hope comes into play. Also for the fact of not really knowing. As soon as we did the compression test, I knew something wasn't right to begin with. To the best of luck.. If you need any help, let me know.

My $.02... Since you mentioned timing... During this build, I figured out that the oil pump shaft has a tiny pit/hole right above the gear that when lined up with another hole on the oil pump and valves 1 and 2 closed, timing is right on. It's retard proof, GO NISSAN!! I finally got my engine back in the Z last night, tinkered with it this morning and got it running flawlessly in about 5 minutes. Good luck with yours. Long live L28.

Compression will certainly be low due to the rings not seating yet. The car will smoke for a while especially if anything was painted and needs to bake in. I would give the car a chance since it is running. If there are further problems with compression after a good bit of miles as well as it continuing to smoke, then it would be the time to conclude that the machine shop did a poor job.

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fucking temperamental.
