HELP!! Synthetic Oil Problem

OK I just switched to Mobil 1 synthetic oil yesterday. My car is a 2000 Civic Si and has 17000 miles and the following mods: AEM CAI DC 4-1 header axle-back exhaust. Well as soon as I got my car back and i started driving it within 5 mins. i noticed a bad smell and some smoke coming from under the hood ( just a tiny amount). Well i worried but after another 2 mins. it had stopped so i attributed it to some oily hand marks on the engine burning off. It hasnt done this since. Since last night its driving really sluggish like I have a lot of weight in the trunk. I opened the hood today and the same strange odor was back something like burnt oil but not exactly. I also checked the oil level and it is fine but seems thin--Could that be because its new oil or synthetic or what? Anyway-what could the cause of these problems be? I havent even really vtecd it since i got it changed but i did run it at the track the night before it was changed. Anyway please somebody help me out! I hope i dont have fried piston rings but im sure there would be other noticable warning signs. Thanks in advance.
Were you using non synthetic before?
Im not really 100% sure whats goin on with your ride but Ive been told that switching from non synthetic to synthetic (or vice versa) can be unhealthy for your car if you do it too much. Did you let the previous (im assuming non sythetic) oil drain out completly? Did you also change the oil filter? If not there may have been some non synthetic left over in the filter that mixed with the new oil.
Thats weird that you say that the oil seemed thin because usually synthetic oils are alittle thicker than non synthetics.
I personally suggest you try to stick with the mobil.
I dunno though...Im no professional mechanic or anything...just my two cents.
mike.

You probably spilled some outside the engine so its burning it off.Synthetic is a betterhigher quality petroleum oil that gives u better protection over conventional oil.Your car will run cooler thus u dont have to worry if u pass your 3000 miles recommended oil change. It Shouldn`t HARM you car in anywaybut synthetic was not recommended during the break-in stage when u first bought your car to let the bearings and rings seated right.Since your car has 17K miles i dont see that was a problem. BTWwhat grade oil did you use? 15-50 could give u a little sluggishness to your ride. Try use a lower grade next time.
the only problem i have with this synthetic oil is that once you go to it you cant really go back. Well i know that you can but it leaves this sludge in the engine.. Just a thought. I use the part-synthetic
