the definition of a sports car has been around before most of us were born. a mustang or a camaro isnt a sports car. its a pony car etc.... the purest definition has already been mentioned of what a real sports car is.... 2 doors, 2 passengers. rwd...

If it looks like a dog, barks like a dog and walks like a dog then it must be a dog right???!!!

Some sport cars have used the front-engine, front-wheel drive layout (FF), e.g. Fiat Barchetta, Saab Sonett and Berkeley cars. This layout is advantageous for small, light, lower power sports cars, as it avoids the extra weight, increased transmission power loss, and packaging problems of a long driveshaft and longitudinal engine of FR vehicles. Yet, its conservative handling effect, particularly understeer, and the fact that many drivers believe rear wheel drive is a more desirable layout for a sports car make this layout atypical to high-performance sports cars. The FF layout, however, is common in sport compacts and hot hatches, and cars in general (excepting sports cars).

What makes a "Sportscar" a "Sportscar" again?

oh wait, I know..
What makes a "Sportscar" a "Sportscar"

A sports car does not require a large, powerful engine, though many do have them. Many classic British sports cars lacked powerful engines, but were known for exceptional handling due to light weight, a well-engineered, balanced chassis, and modern suspension (for example, Lotus Seven, Austin 7 Speedy). On tight, twisting roads, such a sports car may perform more effectively than a heavier, more powerful car.

SPORTSCAR "FR ONLY". GTFO!

^ why, how does 2 doors, 2 passengers. (rwd only) make a sportscar?

FF cars can and have out performed rwd cars. You guys need except the fact some FF cars can generally can be classified as sportscars. I know its hard to admit some FF cars do have good aspects about them.. usually alot lighter then rwd cars witch is a huge advantage on the track!

I agree with most on FWD is not a sports car. I will give the Type-R's and what not the title of "Sporty", but again not a true sports car. Its embarrassing when you see someone with a Neon or Saturn trying so hard to be one. I even question someone when they buy a FWD car, as to how true of a gear head they are.

With that being said, I believe some 4cyl, AWD and 4 door cars can be sports cars. I have an Evo and that is 4-door AWD 4cyl and I would say that is a sports car. I have had quite a few STi's and again I challenge someone to say thats not a sports-car.

Now with my BMW, it is RWD, 2 door and I-6 Twin Turbo with roughly 400HP. But as it is Steptronic and mainly luxury I wouldn't really call it a Sports Car.

so is the car commonly used in motorsports? if yes then it is a sports car. if no, then it is not.

Motorsport

the CR-X is popular for motorsport usage. In the United Kingdom, there was a one make series dedicated to the series 2 of the CR-X[6] which soldiered on a few years after the series 3 was introduced and was popular for showroom stock racing series. Nowadays, the car is popular for drag, autocross, and road racing events.

Im sure they use alot of crx's in japan for circuit racing too!

I have a sportscar!!

How many of the people arguing have even driven a car that could be truly defined as a sports car? Apparently my mr2 would be considered a sports car but my old pos maxima would rape it in a straight sadly. There is such a big difference in driving either of them though, ever since I got my mr2 I've noticed just how much more I really enjoy driving everywhere and anywhere. It's not what I would consider fast at all but it's a hell of a lot more fun to drive than all the other fwd grocery-getters people seem to love. Whether you like it or not, definition > opinion.

This is a track race car.... Not a sportscar....

My Z3 is a sport car, well more of a roadster, and almost every car on the road can either rape me on the highway or on the street... Even though its a BMW its not a luxary car considering its gear ratio, cabin noise, and stiff suspension.

I have a roadster/sport car, but its no where near a race car... Right.

Who would have thought that this question would have gotten so many panties in a bunch?

I pretty much agree with what RandyCSVT and Troux said, miasma also proved a point with his example.

When I bought my 04 Cavalier 4 door my insurance agent told me my rate was going up, because it is a LS Sport model. I said, but its got the same engine and tranny as a regular model, its just an appearance package. She said its called sport so its going up.

Guess insurance companies are run by ricers, because apparently they think ground effects and larger rims = supervtaakPOWERRRRRRRRRRR.

I tried to take your post as a joke.. but then I realized you seriously do believe what you wrote..

Performance numbers don't mean anything when it comes to vehicle classification... There are 10 second fwd mini vans out there, they are not sports cars.

Sports Car
2 doors
1 or 2 seats
rwd
any size engine
manual transmission

Thats all there is to it.
