there are a series of steps you must take and from what ive read you still have yet to take the first step, and that is getting a Florida Title for it. I know of a few ways.

Who was the RI? Who was the ICI? If you got it legally imported, you should have no problem posting this information.

Charles
I bet 10 bucks he, for some reason, doesn't or cannot provide this info.

Like i said Initially, unless you're a collector and got tons of money to waste then it makes more sense to just sell the car for parts or sell it whole and make it someone elses problem to get it legal. The US doesn't quite like people bringing in foreign cars when you can "buy american" and stimulate our own economy. That's why they rape you in situations like this under the guise of "safety guidelines" when a lot of older cars didn't even come with factory seatbelts let alone airbags or anything yet they are american cars so they're street legal right...LOL . All in all it's way too much of a hassle to deal with.

So you will have to do this by scratch...
Step 1, have an RI submit paperwork for FMVSS compliance procedures, along with crash tests (typically 2) that they have performed on modified JDM supras. Submit request for admitance to NHSTA eligibility list. Get listed in federal register for comment period. This should take 6 months. yes, you will need to crash test 2 Supras. If approved, you will have to export your supra, and reimport it with the conformance bond, HS-7 properly filled out and letter allowing it to be modified. The RI will then have to perform the FMVSS compliance work.

Once the RI is done with the car, it will have to go to an ICI for emissions compliance and testing. Once the EPA and NHSTA approve your paperwork, they will release your bond, and your vehicle. Shouldn't take more than a year or 2.

don't forget, you need to import those 2 supras to crash test first .
whoa whoa whoa. So you have to import 2 WORKING identical supras for them to destroy just so they can crash test them and even that's not a guaranty they'll make the original car legal?

When people were importing "grey market" Porsches from Germany,
there was a list of what had to be changed to be "Federal-legal",
including headlights, door bars, bumpers, emissions, etc and I don't have the list.

Once you had it inspected and signed off as US-legal, you also paid to get the original stuff put back on...... that way it could be the equal of "JDM"......
...if you wanted that status........

There are sometimes imports sold at govt auctions where you can buy a confiscated import where the time ran out for the owner on getting it converted to US specs. There are websites.......

I would be very cautious about giving out any information to the govt on a car I liked,
until I had learned all that I needed to know from someone who has successfully
been through the process....this prevents confiscation/crushing/auctioning without full due process.....

At one time a McLaren full blown race car could be registered in Florida as
a "grove Goat".......I don't know if this can still be done and don't ask how
I know this.-Bob

Ever see the movie: Rainman? Shyster Tom cruise was importing and converting cars to US specs.........as time and money

Grove Goat forms:

I can totally see hauling oranges in a Supra TT. If the dmv tries to give you a hard time, tell them you need to get your crop back to your barn FAST lol.

If you were trying to import the car legally, you shouldn't have it in your possesion until all the legalization is completed. The fact that you do have it in your garage is hint #1 that it was done wrong.

Look at the list I posted several posts up. The Porsche is on the list of cars eligible to be imported, the SUPRA is not. Case Closed.

Also, I was being sarcastic in a way. You do need to crash test some Supras, but honestly, your not going to find a RI or ICI to help you. Call a few and ask them yourself. List of Current RI's:http://204.68.195.250/cars/RULES/IMP...list062609.pdf

Here's a good read: Importation and Certification FAQ's Directory--All Vehicles

If the vehicle you are seeking to import is a RHD, even if there were a U.S.-certified left-hand version of that vehicle, it might not be considered "substantially similar" for import eligibility purposes. Our experience has shown that the safety performance of RHD vehicles is not necessarily the same as that of apparently similar left-hand drive vehicles offered for sale in this country.
