I refer you to an earlier post on this thread about a person's concern about "legality"............don't expect life to be fair........

If we can have Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geitner appointed by You-know-who, who accidentally forgot to pay his taxes for thousands of dollars, plus 3 more appointees who declined an appointment when taxes were mentioned, and Senator Charles Rangel who accidentally forgot to pay his taxes for several years.....and those people are RUNNING the govt, then maybe you should get things into prospective, and look up the earlier posting....-Bob

Some people say that if safety was our primary concern, instead of
making people poorer through higher prices, (and the higher taxes to the govt that accompany higher prices), then it is logical that you should have the right to accept your own risk, and federal safety items should be options that people can either accept or delete.-Bob

Shit, Jay Leno had some car registered federally that would be illegal for everyone else just because he had his buddy Bill Clinton "help" him out.

If you have an illegal car here that's registered, good for you. More power to you.

4 and 1/2 years later... Here is some info. The OP said it was here legally.
In general it is not to easy to sneak a car in from Japan, and the OP did not say they did.
I am sure they have done something by now, but the process is as follows;
Take the car down to the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's office (Or your local tax collector).
Have them verify the VIN/Chassis number. This must be done by them, it cannot be done by police, or dealers etc for imports.
Bring your Mashho (Japan De-registration) and your paperwork from customs.
Normally this would be a copy of the completed and accepted EPA 3520-1 and DOT HS-7 and the Customs clearance,
you may get a copy of the CBP 7501 along with a copy of the taxes paid to bring it in.
Since the OP brought it in thru the DOD, I am unclear as to what paperwork he has but take his word it is legal.
It really does not matter, because the car is on his property and has passed customs so any Federal issues are moot.
Simply, the Feds are not coming after you.
With your papers and the VIN check by Tax Collector or HSDMV you can get your FL title.
Another route is the fact he owned the property or had control of it. (His garage) so he could also get title thru the landlord act.
FL DMV procedure TL-16. Lastly he could hire a towing company to get the title, FL DMV procedure TL-25, tow trucks use this when your car is towed and you dont pick it up.
So there are several way in FL to title and register this car which by now is likely long gone.

Why would you choose to make your first post in here? Are you new to the internet?
