Importation and Certification FAQ's Directory

NHTSA is not responsible for regulating the operation of motor vehicles on public roads in the U.S. or for titling or registering motor vehicles for such operation. That is instead the responsibility of the individual States. Some States may require a manufacturer's certificate of origin (MCO) or manufacturer's statement of origin (MSO) to register a new motor vehicle. These are not federally required documents. NHTSA, therefore, is not in a position to offer guidance to prospective vehicle manufacturers or vehicle purchasers on obtaining a needed MCO or MSO. Consumers with questions regarding these documents should direct those questions to their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Prospective manufacturers seeking guidance on obtaining MCO or MSO documents should contact the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) at 703-522-4201 or visit that organization's website at http://www.aamva.org.

Whatever you say guy. Everything I mentioned is straiht from nhsta's website. Do some more searching and you'll find exactly what I posted. The vsa number is there and gives a description of what it entails. They also state that if a foreign car has already been appoved for road use in Canada, it's got a good chance of passing here if it's "significantly similar". It's all on their site if you dig deep enough.

America is the worst country to be a car enthusiast. All these safety laws regarding importing are complete fucking BULLSHIT. It's just a way to keep you from buying foreign. You can build a fucking car in your garage with questionable safety and drive it on the streets but a foreign car that's been safety tested in it's own country is a no go? Shit, Jay Leno had some car registered federally that would be illegal for everyone else just because he had his buddy Bill Clinton "help" him out.

If you have an illegal car here that's registered, good for you. More power to you.

Would same laws go for jdm cars legalized in canada..because in a month or two I'm going for a older civic I heard some cars depending on yr can't be legalized And I heard that from a importer in miami, but as far as a car coming from japan I heard that was illegal to do but then again I have a neighbor that got a newer civic not even on the list fully legalized but took the car to maine it went thru customs titleing registered. And everything esle then brought it bac down to tampa n is driving it here daily
