a b16a is special because it makes 160hp.

for a motor to make 100hp per liter is pretty remarkable...especially when honda did this in 1989.

the s2000 motor is 2.0 liters and makes 240hp.

and this is in stock form, from the factory. that would be like a 4.6 mustang motor making 460hp, etc, etc.

and i know its unfair to compare smaller displacement motors to larger displacement motors but it doesn't take an import enthusiast to admit that honda's b16a is a remarkable piece of engineering.

on top of the 160hp, it gets 30mpg.

show me a v8 that gets that kind of gas mileage and makes around 100hp per liter. as far as i know, thats impossible.

and a honda 1.6 liter motor can make over 200whp when properly built...which is amazing considering the motor remains reliable if the person turning the wrench is a decent mechanic.

again, i know v8's make more power, as they should...but we're comparing two completely different powerplants..

american muscle vs japanese technology.

i will almost always take japanese technology because i like to get 30mpg...and i like having a car that i can auto-x and do well...and i like being able to take this car to the track and run decent times.

chet you are a good guy, but i rolled my eyes at what you just said.

ill admit 100 per liter is nice, but it doesnt really mean a thing when you barely have 2 liters... or less! Comparing it to a V8 is more of a meaningless statistic than anything.

at the end of the day, an LS1 has 350 at the crank and a B16 doesnt even have half of that!

This is the gayest conversation..100 hp per litre ain't shit, motorcycles have been doing it without VTEC or Fuel injection for friggin decades. Why a person wants to buy an engine that is already zinged out is beyond me. Torque is too much fun.

i agree, comparing v8's to inline four cylinder honda motors isn't worth doing. however, i was answering the question asked earlier about why a b16 is "special."

and honda's engineering is some of the best in the world, and if you ask any engine builder they will tell you the quality and precision honda motors are built with is amazing.

now obviously they don't make the horsepower a v8 will when both are naturally aspirated...and i've never been one for horsepower numbers anyway.

my point is that i will have a low 13 second car for under 10k with air conditioning and full interior. this is all with a naturally aspirated setup. and while its rare for a naturally aspirated honda to be in the 12's, it just takes some knowledge and you are there.

and i have always been the first to say v8's are the best way to go fast in a straight line. i'll probably end up owning a v8 powered corvette or camaro when i have 30k to spend and i don't mind getting less than 20mpg.

and tony, comparing motor cycle engines to automobile engines simply isn't realistic. like i stated before, honda had designed and engineered the b16 for regular production in 1989. no other car company in the world (besides maybe the exotics) was even close with their engineering...and if you compare american 4 cylinder motors they are still light years behind.
