$5000 is a huge exaggeration. Replaced the shocks on both the hood and the trunk recently on ours and replacing an o2 sensor and some sway bar links is easy enough. All parts can be found online dirty cheap. And a rear main seal leak is usually caused by the car sitting for a while and some driving around stops it. Did with ours anyway. For the year, that car was in really good condition.

Love the video, I don't think most people understand the fact that a lot of mechanics wouldn't let you film them while they work, let alone explain everything they're doing and looking for. I would love to see a more detailed breakdown of that $5k repair bill (I know it lists the specific problem areas in the description, but there's no cost next to each item), as well as the cost of the inspection itself. Keep up the great content!

This buyer clearly had only a business interest in this purchase, and therefore should go ahead and shop forever until they stumble upon perfection. A typical person looking for the used sports car of their dreams is not going to walk away because of the insignificant issues that were found on this SEVEN YEAR OLD example.

5000 is way over exaggerated. I know for a fact an o2 sensor $30.00x2, Poly bushing for the sway bar = $79.99. Some rear main seals leak from just sitting so it's not like it was banged on. The clip I know is a mere $10.00. Im going to add shocks and struts for all four sides including bumpstops. These were the honda civics of Porsche. It's not a GT3. I have worked on several of these in my time

Everything he found wrong with the car is a minor nuisance at best, except oil the leak in the Rear Main Seal area. The so called "Specialist" did not check the main thing that he was supposed to check on these - the VANOS (variable valve timing) health. There are diagnostic tools that can detect detect whether the IMS (Intermediate shaft) bearing is on its way out, because it affects the functioning of the VANOS.

Draining oil and looking for debris from a failing IMS bearing is a must when you do a pre-purchase inspection on any M96/M97 type engine. When (not if) the IMS grenades, you will need a replacement engine. You can get a rebuilt one from Germany, for more than the market value of a running 996, or a used one from a wreck. The only real solution to the IMS problem on these cars is to install a plain bearing and an oil line to

supply oil to it (a kit is available for this). It requires engine modification beyond what a typical DIYer will do. Every other solution is not permanent, but a band-aid. If the RMS is leaking at this day and age, chances are it will leak forever and there is absolutely nothing short of an engine replacement that can be done to fix it. Sure, you can replace the rear main seal with a new one. It may even stop leaking for some 30K miles if

you are lucky (or it will leak the next day if you are not). In their pursuit of weight savings, the engineers made the crankshaft cradle and cases somewhat weak, plus Porsche had problems with the quality of aluminum casting on these engines (some of them came with sleeves from the factory, on a brand new car!) Eventually, once the engine enough start/stop (warm up/cool down) cycles the aluminum will deform and the rear

main seal will be off-center with respect to the main bearings bore. Short of taking the engine completely apart and doing some impractically expensive machine work, there is really nothing you can do to fix the problem. Unfortunately the RMS leaking is sometimes and indicator of a more severe problem going on: once the crankshaft cradle is deformed, you may get one or more main bearings that become too tight/off center.

This problem eventually causes catastrophic engine failure. So, yeah, if a Boxster or a 996 has a leaky RMS, you should treat that car as a very expensive lottery ticket. Personally I don't work on these cars any more, even though I used to do it a lot. Their market value has gone down so much, they are not worth the effort. There are better handling and faster cars that can be had for less money.

I had one, and depending on what model and year you have, you can find the parts to fix a majority of your problems, and definately save a boat load of money if you can turn a wrench yourself. If you can reach it and don't have to go too far into the engine for maintenance or repairs, and unless you are literally physically handicapped where you can't crawl around your car to work on it, then there is no reason you shouldn't be doing

everything yourself. Especially in today's age where damn near everything you want to do, someone has already done it and made a step by step video or walk-through on some site for you to follow. Some Porsches are a blast to drive and you can find them relatively cheap.... ish. (Again, depending on make/model/year) If the transmission goes though, take that @#$& across the scales and look for something else

( Or as I did, get full coverage insurance with theft coverage, wait a bit, then have your homie come get it, take it across town and set it on fire. Then report it stolen, file a claim, and wait for your check ......lol just kidding...) (...or AM I?? )

I like to buy cars that are good deals, but might need a few things.Put the $ in myself. This way i know whatever problems fixed are w new oemparts, that it was done right, and then you even have some good service record receipts now lol. Any car you look at it will have its common issues, like certain gaskets that like to leak, the IMS bearing issue is another example.

But its the buyers responsibility to do their research and find out these common problem areas for the car you're interested in and check if its been corrected already or if it will need to be done. This can save you thousands in repairs and is overlooked too much. Go on the forums and make a post. Say you're in the market for this car with this spec.

What should i look out for? Whats a fair price in the mileage/condition bracket im shopping in. What will eventually probably break and how much is that to fix. Also you might gain some knowledge on some options or packages you didnt know about and want or some overhyped.
