Absolutely, but there is a fine difference in what we feel or think, and what really happens.

If you want a shop put it together and not just do the honing work then i would go with a reputable shop......but all built motors are hit or miss. If it's not the machine work it's the timing tensioner or something that bites you in the ass.

If you want a complete build done right, with tight tolerances, and to spec i would get a 2.3 de-stroker from "HomemadeWRX." Heard nothing but good things. You will pay for it though.

blacksti had it right, shits all the same.

If you only need honing and doing the work yourself almost any experienced machine shop can do it. I would still recommend a high dollar equipment to do the milling. IE. GCRE etc.

a motor is a motor but not all machine shops have the right tools to bore the subi motor right. If a machine shop hasn't bored/honed a ej257 they probably aren't going to have the right torque plates to do it right. I don't want to end up with a fubared build because my bore is tapered or off. Also they have to have the right hone cutter to reach the bottom of the cross hatch.

I called Godwin-Singer and they told me they dont have experience with the Subaru motors and that fitbeko is the 1st one they are doing so they wouldnt even have accurate pricing until they are done with his. I would be putting the block together myself, i'm just looking for a machine shop that has the right tools and has done subi motors

Ah, i see your dilemma. Yeah, i wouldn't take it to them either then.
Weird......shops down there never touched a subi motor?

Figured there was more built scoobs down there. Built scoob motors here are pretty common and usually have a few shops that are "dependable."

Good luck with your hunt....might be better to actually freight it in your case. :/

^ thats what I said but I guess most the "built" subies around here just buy brand new shortblocks then drop in pistons so there isn't any machining involved since they use stock bore pistons. I can get a used SB for cheaper and just have it re bore and honed for much less then the price of a new shortblock. Now if I can just find a good machine shop that has done ej257 in the past.

Their hands have been on plenty of Subarus in Orlando. I actually know the owner of their "shop" '07 STi. That car has had a built motor for something like 40K miles now and should be around 500whp on race gas (though its almost always on 93).

But if you are going to assemble the block yourself, there's no point in going to most of the shops in this thread as they outsource the machine work and just do assembly in house. I would ask some of the notable engine builders on NASIOC where they get their machine work done and just send the block there. It doesn't NEED to be local if they're just re-honing for some .5mm oversize pistons.

I knew you weren't going to sell it. After all that work you put in? C'mon.
