Here's the latest news on my junk..... After the initial look over I thought the problem was the known thin deck surfaces of the E7's were giving me trouble, but after further examination I found the deck surfaces on the block suck and the head surfaces wern't great either..... So since things needed to be surfaced the motor needed to come apart..... Upon disassembly I found the upper rod and lower main bearings were just starting to chow some copper, also 2 of the pistons had all the ring grooves in line(not good)..... I decide I am going to use the rotating assembly from this motor in the other block I have because that block only has about 2900 miles on it and the bores are near perfect..... I have already had the block surfaced and the heads are getting done this week..... Then it's getting rebuilt with Total Seal rings and some new bearings, I am going to use Cometic head gaskets since I have everything freshly surfaced..... I think I am going to put the stamped steel rockers back on it since they are much quieter then the rollers are and I didn't really pick up anything for them anyways.....

Wasn't the engine in the car low mile? Sounds like a plan and cheaper than new heads too.

The one in the car has just under 40,000 on it, way too many niles.....

The bores in the other block are like new except for a couple minor lines so I am going to use it instead.....

I wonder how much the 2 sets of rings lined up hurt you?

How do piston rings get lined up like that? I thought when they are lined up like that its a sign of being rebuilt by an amateur? Is it possible for them to line up like that on their own? Is that common or pretty damn rare?

On the other 6 pistons the end gaps for the 1st and 2nd rings were approx 1/3 the way around the piston apart which is what I have usually found on the stock motors..... I would say someone screwed the pooch on the other 2 when assembling the motor..... I have never seen them inline like that on a factory assembled motor.....

Damn Fords... Lol

That sucks major nuts considering how fast that little coupe was on a stock longblock. Just goes to show how well you're susp../trans-line works together!

I wasnt there when the motor was pulled from the car. But I do remember laughing at him when I saw it sitting on a milk crate in the corner of his garage. We were both pretty young back then. I left Md in 99 and bought the motor from him in 2007. My father inlaw was up there visiting family and brought it back down here. I bolted it to an engine stand where it stayed untouched until you bought it from me. The only thing I ever did was pressure washed it before you came to pick it up because it had layers of crud all over it.

He's not the mechanical type to rebuild a motor. It was only in the car for maybe 2 - 2 1/2 yrs. He bought a crate 460 motor with SCJ heads to replace it. I've always been of the opinion that if you see rings lined up like that then the motor had been apart and an amateur put it back together. But for only 2 pistons to be like that? (shrug). When I bought it from him he promised me that it was exactly as I had last seen it,.. though he did omit to tell me it was missing the harmonic balancer. I've only pulled apart 7 or 8 HO engines,.. but like you,.. I've never seen the rings lined up like that.

I apologize if there is anything wrong with the motor Frank, and if there is anything you need from me please PM me and we can talk. I dont want you to feel like I screwed you.

Are the rings all factory rings or do they show signs of being replaced?
