ok guys and gals. i have a 89 s13 sr20det manual transmission.
im having a problem .
as i release the clutch in 1st, sometimes it grinds . i push the clutch back in ,grinding stays.and when i shift it into nutral it goes away.
does same in reverse.
SLOW speeds as in traffic .
it goes in and out of gear as normal.
no other issues as far a shifting goes.

im guessing syncros ?

 

synchros are usually when going in gear, not while in gear.

in my experience, grinding noises while in gear like what you are describing tends to point to clutch issues.
could be something dumb like the gear lube leaked out.

does one think it could be a bad master/slave cyl?

 

if it was the clutch system, then you would have difficulty shifting. And I doubt there would be any noise associated with that.. not that I've ever experienced anyway.
It kinda sucks, but I'd start with dropping the tranny and seeing what it all looks like. Hopefully you'll get lucky and it will just be something like a bad pressure plate or something like that. If everything checks out, then the tranny might be on its last leg.

seems to be pressure plate. clutch is soft .
