Yet another z32 brake question

Default Yet another z32 brake question

Ok, I kinda screwed meself. Here's the run down...

I started out w/ 30mil iron calipers w/ the proper rotors. I needed brake hardware so I bought the pins and
shit...-$42.00 for that. Had the rotors drilled to 4 lug...-$20. Then I came across some 30mil aluminum ones. Got those powder coated...-$40 for that.
Sold the iron ones before I even thought about confirming the aluminum ones are/were 30mm. Well, the "30mm" aluminum ones are indeed 26mm.

Here's the dilemma. That flippin' piece of tin that came w/ the rods and springs, can that be used w/ the 26mm calipers although I was told that it's for 30mm? It's a slightly tight squeeze to get it in place, but it'll be a bit comfortable if I clear out the powder coat in the troubled area.

I'm trying to save a few pennies, and I know corners shouldn't be cut when dealing w/ most things, especially brakes.

so you've spent all of that money, and now you want to cheap out on a 9 dollar part?



no, it won't work without some kind of modification. And you are totally right about cutting corners, especially when talking about brakes.

Personally, I think it was dumb to have your rotors drilled to 4 lug considering how easily available the 5 lug swap pieces are, but that's just personal preference. Maybe it was to save you on getting wheels or something. So whatever.
However, it becomes really dumb to cheap out and cut corners when you're talking about such a cheap part. Destroy the fresh powder coat you just got, and modify pieces to save less than 10 bucks.

I drilled the rotors to keep from having to spend money on a 5lug swap, plus the cost of rims. The rotors weren't redrilled in my back yard, I had a friend do it who works at a legitimate machine shop...so, I feel safe and confident.

Me not knowing about the part in question leaves me waiting to decide if I actually "need" the correct piece/parts. Now that I know, I know what needs to be done. Thanks.

Different part numbers for the 26mm and the 30mm brakes... Anything from 7/90 and newer is the 30mm brakes.

The spring clip keeps pressure/tension on the pad while it rides in the caliper. It helps to reduce noise and keep the pads aligned so you dont have odd ball wear on them. Like Empire stated they are worth the 9 bucks they cost, especially if this is your daily.

A side note for anyone doing any kind of brake swap. Making sure your brakes are equipped the way they came from the factory is much more important than what color you powder coat them. Spend your hard earned cash wisely. Dont cheap out on hardware they came with just for the sake of them being pretty red. Thats so "Honda". Eh.

I'm not wanting to cut corners w/ the piece in question. Just wanted to know if there is a difference between the piece on the 26mm & 30mm. If there is, (which is now clarified that there is) I'll be getting what is appropriate for my 26mm.

Honda guys powder coat their calipers red before getting all of the correct pieces needed for proper install. Don't be a Honda guy.

Not that its the right way to do it, i just thought if add...The clip isn't weighted or rotating so if it weighed a gram less from shaving off a side your not going to damage your brakes. I know it's super cheap and is a safety matter but as long as the clip is not getting hung up on the caliper and still makes contact on the entire area (if you started with a 26 and then got a bigger caliper it may pose a problem) i wouldn't think twice about it. Race cars run no spring clips on the regular (I know you aren't in a racecar..) but it is almost completely to get rid of chatter and make assembly easier. I don't see how that clip will ever resist against a piston so I'm not so sure on even wear being so much a factor.
