Datsun Dreaming
Its obvious that it does stiffen the frame. There's no arguing that. Can you feel the difference? I have no clue. But obviously the manufacturers don't think that current cars (excluding luxury cars) need it enough to justify the implementation costs which stretch far beyond just the cost of the foam.
And this is where my problem is. I don't believe it. Just like when people change a suspension setting 1/1000 of a degree and claim it made a huge difference in turn in from the driver seat. Or go with a 0.1 lb lighter wheel, and claim to have a huge monumental decrease in unsprung weight that they can feel from behind the wheel.
I forget, how many of you guys are professional race car drivers? I'm not. I sure as hell can't feel any of that shit from the driver seat.
You feel it because you want to feel it.

I agree that perception doesn't always equal reality, and that the placebo effect can be a bitch. That doesn't mean when I say it works, that it's all in my head because you disagree.
And, turning my name and enthusiasm for this into some sort of internet conspiracy is insulting and hilarious at the same time. I talked with the guy in that FA thread after he had concluded his own experiments. His findings were already documented before I was involved. If anything, that thread only serves my point, that 2 separate tests came to the same conclusion.
Since we're dismissing all scientific arguements now, lets recap what's left:
ME: I know, due to my own use, that this stuff makes a qualitative difference in the chassis.
YOU: Have no experience with the subject and made up your mind based on internet readings.
PS: The RX8 handling pack includes a foam filled front crossmember.
this sounds like a line out of the matrix or something lol

So you're not a race car driver, but you are a psycologist?

Pssh. You know I'm not trying to insult you, don't try and turn it into that sorta stupid argument. I just think too many kids read your words as thought they were some sort of laws of 240sx physics. "If Epstein says it, it must be true!"
I can disagree with you and not be insulting you
And great, we now have one OEM application of the stuff for performance gains. High five I guess?
The placebo effect is a bitch, and without some sort better data to back it up other than a couple guys' butt dynos claiming to have huge gains in chassis performance, I'm still going to have to agree to disagree. Especially since other guys with different (well calibrated?
) butt dynos are getting different results.

And not to nit pick, but nit pick: You're the one who sold him on the idea... a month before the other thread. How were his findings documented before he bought the materials?

Feel it or not, I'm just happy to know that my rockers are so strong I could probably do a 50/50 grind and not dent them.
I mostly think the conspiracy theory is more awesome than insulting or hilarious.
Honestly, you probably won't find more OEM applications of this technology due to a number of reasons: potential for moisture buildup, the fact that you could probably just design a stronger member like OEMs have the power to do, deployment in the factory, access to voids, etc. The aftermarket/tuner might be where this stays simply because it's really geared towards retrofitting. Again, if the OEM wanted a stronger rocker/pillar/etc then they can just design one. The RX8 is an interesting case because it was probably easier to just fill it than to redesign the crossmember. Now, why Nissan just adds a ton of braces to S15 Spec-R's and Nismo 350Z's instead of foaming, I dunno.
Want to debate something else? I think fender braces are the shit! ...and GO!
