How do you make a timing belt too tight? The tensioner does all the work so it never gets too tight or not tight enough. Did you guys use a used tensioner or timing belt?

Sucks about your luck but glad to hear it will be up and running again soon.

The tensioner does not do all the work, look at the timing belt VFAQ diagram to understand. You have to set the tension manually using the eccentric pulley, and the tensioner is there to take up slack when the car is revving.

Brothers, next time there is a real easy test to see if the tension is correct. When you set the tension and let everything settle, see if there is any resistance in the tensioner pin. If there is any resistance the tension is wrong (and by looking at the tensioner shaft position relative to the pin hole you can tell if its too loose or tight). If the pin slides freely, you are good to go.

You are right I forgot about that. It's been a long time since I have done anything like that on a motor. Feel like doing 2 motor swaps and trans swaps with timing belt shit in a couple days with no power tools again?

Brothers-- np, let me know if you need help setting the tension next time, I'd be happy to show you. Its alot easier to understand the method when you see someone do it rather than read about it. I have done so many timing belts its like tieing a shoe lace for me. Last time I messed around in that area I swapped cams, broke down & reassembled the timing belt all in about 30 mins. I've done too many!

Dont tell no one yet..... sheesh. Its suppose to be a secret guys, remember? Wait till the car makes the numbers first, and that way, if its disappointing, no one has to know.
