turbo question/opinions
ok...... im on a new quest. i decided since i like the # 4 so much why not have 400whp in a 4 cyl crx
so i guess turbo is the way. now here is the pickle pincher. i have a ls block, and was planning on building ls-vtec turbo since i already have enough parts to make it happen. but then i started to think is vtec really all that necessary? i know it help but am i wasteing my time by add that head on. i know i would make more power with it on but if i can manage it without it why waste the money and time on it. my block will be sleeved (2 litre
)and i will be doing it right the first time. post up!

Stock for stock the VTEC head is gonna flow better, you could port the LS head though. A stock b16 head will flow a tiny bit better up top, a GSR a tiny bit better down low. But the GSR will bump up your compression ratio a little so you will gain some power there 2!
Bottom line, your gonna make more power with the VTEC head like you already stated. Are you gonna have a built bottom end? What are you gonna do about the RS ratio? You gonna throw some GSR internals in the LS block?
I guess it all depends on your budget..
Been there and done that, let me know if you have any questions..
Good luck with it!

since the vtec gives you a usable rpm range above 6 or 7k rpms, I'd use it. without the vtec your power band will drop off around 6.5k, where as with vtec you have alot more rpm to go through before your next shift. my opinion, life without vtec is like life without toilet paper...........kinda shitty.
you turbo that crx and you can say goodbye to your miracle displays of FWD launching...
whatever you decide to do, hurry up
whatever you decide to do, hurry up

The best engine in the world is the vagina, it takes any size piston, its self lubricating, starts with 1 finger, and every 4 weeks does its own oil change. It's just a pity the management system is so fucking temperamental.

Think about it this way CJ... Your goal is 400whp... With a straight LS, you will make about 350-370tq at 400whp... Now, on an LS VTEC setup, with 400whp, you will most likely only have 250-270tq.. Pretty significant difference.....
EDIT: Keep in mind, this in the average for both setups being 1.8L... You will get more torque on either, due to the fact you are running a 2L block...

whats up cee jay, i think that it should all revovle around the turbo you are gonna use. and a HP goal. you said you want for hundred so, a turbo that is gonna make 400 on pump will more than likely need to be revved kinda high and by that i mean 8500+ but less than 10k. becuase of course turbos are high end HP not really low end. as far as high end goes, a vtec head would be more suited due to the parimary lobe on the cam can stay stock and give you low end drivability, and the power lobe is obviously vtec. where as the LS lobes are all modded out and you have to drive and idle on a performance lobe, with shitty idle and crazy gas consumption.
as far as a port job goes, what kind of port job is it, and who did it? all pretty important, on turbo cars, porting on the exhaust side is real tricky, to much exhaust port speed and not enough intake volume decreases flow pressure into the turbo and screws all kinds of things up. also fuel atomization on boost dependig onport size and shape.
all in all sounds like you have a good project on your hands, take your time, the only person you need to impress is yourself, dont rush.
and for the record.............use an AVCR, and street launching is easy
