Reinstating 55mph?
Under open highway conditions there is a speed that the average person is comfortable driving. "Comfortable" as in staying alert and interested. That speed is typically between 80 and 90. We set it at 70 for the lowest common denominator.
The airlines and government would love 55 since it means more revenue. For the rest of us we would be fucked.

The more important downside is the monotony and boredom of driving such a slow pace. It dulls the senses and awareness. Apparently folks on this board rarely venture far from home. Y'all should take a drive out of state sometime and then let us know what your opinions are of a mandatory 55mph limit.

If they'd pass a federal law requiring stop lights to be timed with each other when closer than X feet from each other, it would save ten times the fuel that a national speed limit would save. I get 17 mpg in the Lambo at 50 mph, I get 5 mpg when I'm accelerating, and if I can go five miles at 50 versus 5 miles having to stop and start 20 times, I've saved a significant amount of fuel.

all this would do is increase speeding tickets dramatically, not a damn person would do 55 unless they do 55 now. Personally, I'd I think my road rage is bad enough when people block both lanes doing 65mph and im trying to speed, if it was blocking me at 55 or less mph, id be pointing my gun out the window, all day.
Also, I drove to orlando and back today, from jacksonville, its roughly 140 miles. The trip there i had some speeding partners and did the run in about an hour and a half, on the way back since i had some stuff in the back of the truck i did the speed limit, and it took almost an hour longer. now, at 55mph, I'da slit my fucking throat coming back, 120miles would take me almost 3 hours? FUCK THAT.

Fuck school zones, slowing and stopping burns more gas than 70 on the highway.

im trying out driving at around 70 instead of 80 on this tank of gas(went to daytona on 1-4 yesterday)so far it does seem to improve mileage a bit although i think i will need to make several more trips to the beach to be sure.it seems like that extra 10 miles per hour really increases drag and engine speed without dramatically reducing travel time.not sure much can be done around town since i dont over rev .
all you guys keep doing is bitching about having/trying to breaking the law yet everytime a speeding ticket thread comes up the guy gets bashed. What if there was jail time for speeding would you still do it?
