This is what I sent:

How dare you take away my Right to own a radar Detector? I will be telling as many people as I can to email you with their complaints, I hope you are reasonable and don’t try to pass that bill. Please keep me up to date if you do decide to not pass that bill.

this is what he replied:

Dear Christopher,

Thank you for taking the time to write me a detailed message regarding your opinion radar detectors. As a former Sheriff and a current Senator, I feel that saving lives is the top priority for the State of Florida. In the year 2005, there were 3,543 deaths due to traffic accidents. This number could heavily decrease in the future if citizens of Florida would decrease their speed. Again, I appreciate your comments.

Sincerely,
Senator Oelrich

This is what I replied with:

In the year 2005, there were 3,543 deaths due to traffic accidents, but how many were caused by speeding? how many of that was caused by people 65 or older? I have a good amount of friends who are bike riders and you wouldn't believe how many "Rider Down" emails I get because some 75-85 year old just jutted across all 4 lanes of traffic so she/he can make the bingo game. Radar detectors are not a reason to speed, they are to be used as tool to combat sneaky Cops who hide in completely unmarked Trucks/Cars and pull over a group of 5-10 cars because they were going 5-10mph over. I don't need to tell you about those cops, you were a former sheriff right? Remember, guns don't kill people, People kill people. If you pass this law you will only be taking the Radar detectors out of law abiding citizens

no reply from him yet.

instead of worrying about people that go 10 over on the interstate they should be doing more to cut down on and catch people who speed through residental areas. that is way way way more dangerous. and what about people who run red lights.

ive only lived here about a year and a half, and i can say that a lot of traffic problems and incidents are not caused by speeding. its caused by heavy volume, people who fall asleep at the wheel at a red light, 2 and 3 lane-only roads, and crazy traffic lights that are constantly changing rotations.

if they were to take away radar detectors, i am positive that 90% of radar detector-owning people are not going to slow down. Even people WITH radar detectors get clocked and pulled over for speeding. I used to have one on my old car, and i still got pulled over. Since ive moved here, i havnt had a radar detector OR gotten pulled over.

I dont think people going 5-10mph over the speed limit on howard franklin, dale mabrey, or ulmerton rd(to name a few), is going to cause any traffic accidents. granted, there are people out there that speed dangerously, but I dont really think speeding is the biggest problem. The problem is that people dont pay attention when they drive.

For those of you that got the point, and value our freedom, Thank you.

For those of you that think this is about avoiding a speeding ticket, or that radar detectors suck anyways... get a life.

P.S. For the record I've never owned a Radar detector, but feel I have the right to detect whatever signal is in the air whenever I want.

I agree that radar jammers (which emite signals in licensed FCC frequencies) should be illegal unless the operator owns a license to operate in that frequency.

+1. I'm not going to say I obey the "speed limit" (infact I openly suggest that it is only a speed suggestion) but I'm not going to piss and moan if I ever get pulled over.

People need to stop blaming cops for giving them tickets of any kind. You fucking dumbasses are AWARE that you are breaking the law...just because he caught you doesnt mean if you were to get away, you WERENT breaking the law. STFU.

I'm 17, so no I cant vote.

I know what the point is. I'll draw the line when I think they've gone too far in this situation. I'm not saying they should go ahead with this, just that 99% of the time, politicians are putting band-aids on broken bones.

2kSnakeater said it excellently...the real focus should be on the old people. My fenderless Miata agrees. Granted I'd much much much rather have the attention on RELEVANT subjects, I will also actively argue that speeding is not dangerous more often than not.
