Yes, you need back pressure... I have a set of "bullet" mufflers we use on the circle track cars that I can recomend. There baffled like a muffler but its a "blow thru" type muffler. Then again, were constantly in the high rpm's and were not shifting on the move. Deff dont straight pipe it.... I got a nice $136 ticket for noise pollution when I had mine. Plus it lost alot of power when shifting.

They did that at the inception of the Fox's. I drove my new Mustang to muffler city, had mufflers taken off and straight pipes put on.....drove to Automotive Engineering and bought Flowmasters and pulled back in a Muffle City and had that shit took off and Flows put on!
