linked here from a thread on a bmw forum...

just wanted to say that i have NEVER seen worse driving on a race track. S60R, you have a fast car and without proper training i can see you getting into some SERIOUSLY dangerous situations.

it would be beneficial for you and the other people you share the race track with in the future if you had some proper instruction. us bmw folks have BMW Car Club of America sponsored Driving Education events where highly trained professionals sit with you in the car while you drive and teach you proper racing habits on a race track. I am sure there is a Volvo equivalent and, if not, you are more than welcome to attend a BMW sponsored event ( http://www.fscbmwcca.org or http://www.firstcoastbmw.org). The instructors at these events are usually club racers themselves and are more than willing to help drivers "hone in their skills".

but seriously, please get some proper instruction before going to a race track again alone. it's one thing to put yourself at risk, it's a completely different thing to put others at risk.

I was considering locking this thread, but it's just too entertaining.

Maybe after I finish my popcorn.

I'm not shrugging off criticism, but are you people dense or missing the point that this was a fun run?

This was not a time trial nor me trying to master the perfect technique. This must be the 50th time I'm being reminded this is not 'normal', but no friggin duh everyone.

I'm sure if you were given 10 minutes to do anything you wanted at moroso I wouldn't be nitpicking if you decided to do 360s down the straight and fully drift through every turn, even though its not 'normal' or acceptable track driving. That would be moronic of me but it sure doesn't seem to be stopping others from doing the same though.

Man, I knew I'd get some grief I had no idea the entire 'you can't have fun like that' brigade would be coming to visit. Its like posting a vid of a pie eating contest and having the miss manners types come in to tell me I didn't use the right spoon and fork, lol.

I've got a REAL track event I will be at this weekend where I will certainly be 'normal' enough to even keep most of the purists and fundametalists happy though.

No better way to test out new suspension than to drive half ass. Good thinking.

So Scott, you are honestly going to sit there and tell me you've never deliberately or accidentally thrown the rear of your car out, and then once you did, see if you could keep it in check or control it?

Have you ever pushed a 911 turbo hard and fast through a turn and then have to deal with the exit boost coming on so quickly that its a split second balancing act of gaining some speed back without breaking the rear end loose?

Or how many AWDs have you raced? If the answer is 0 let me tell you that its a bit different from RWD since you have the option of compromising both front and rear grip depending on where and how you apply the power?

But I'm sure with your god like knowledge of all things automotive, racing and in addition to being psychic enough to know what the hell I know that I'm just 'driving half ass'.

And to jworms above, I've been to school and done just fine years ago. In the last 23 years I've attended 2 drivers schools, 5 track events and more auto-xes than I could start to keep track of. My instructors thought I was good. My fellow racers always think I do well, and I've never been penalized or warned for any technique that I've practiced since I do feel I'm good at controlling a car and knowing where to direct it.

Its amazing how despite all that all you need to do is post a couple vids of some non-approved hand action and me DELIBERATELY FUCKING AROUND ON AN EMPTY AND WET TRACK and all of a sudden people who don't even know you come out of the woodwork to tell authoritively that you that you don't know how to drive and are doing it all wrong.

I have driven a very highly prepped '74 911 and a new AWD car.... no driving in that video applies to driving either.

the point you are missing is that this "deliberate" sliding around and fucking up you were doing shows you absolutely nothing. Craig hit on the reason earlier and idk if you just decided to skip over reading that part or what... but geez

One of the reasons you are getting barraged the most is because you posted a lap time and said something to the effect of "that's pretty good" and then also noting a speed.

you're not getting it. the way you conducted yourself in the "just for fun" video is not exactly far off from the other video that was posted where you were on the track with others being "serious". even then, nobody in their right mind would do what you did on the track the way you did it, even if they were "just having fun".

a perfect example is how you keep mentioning the "9and3" hater crew, but what you don't understand is that even when messing around on a track, no educated driver holds the steering wheel like you do and NO INSTRUCTOR would ever let you drive on a track without pounding into your head that you keep both hands on the wheel unless you are shifting; and even when shifting, you definitely don't bust out the "gangsta lean" grip.

but even beyond that, you made so many basic driving level mistakes that, even when messing around, should not be made and could easily put you in a very dangerous situation. don't get it twisted, these driving "rules" aren't arbitrary things created from thin air. they exist to keep you and others safe while extracting the most performance from your car (which btw, you are nowhere near doing with your car).

you say you have all this experience, but your actions speak WAY louder than your words.

again, i HIGHLY suggest you get some proper instruction before you drive on a race track again.

It doesn't matter if this was a 'fun run' as you put it. You are still dangerous and easily distracted behing the wheel. I'm thankful that I won't have to share a track with you this weekend. Your actions in the car are too natural meaning you do it frequently and you will do it again and again without proper instruction.
If I was given 10 mins at a racetrack you bet your ass I'd be playing by the rules...as well as most of the other people on here. 'Fun run' or not, mistakes happen on a racetrack when you act like an ass hat.
