Default **Transmission issue** Please help!!

Alright guys, I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet in hopes of getting some sort of idea to what is going on.

96 vr6 5spd. Only thing I have changed were the motor mounts stage 1 bfi mounts including tranny mount.

This morning I go to put my car into gear and I CAN'T get into Reverse, 1st, or 2nd gear. I drove the car the night before without any issues. I've never even grinded a gear. Please guys all jokes aside can you help me out? I've never changed the trany fluid and I know thats a fail on my part but I never had a reason to, everything has always worked perfect. I did find though that when trying to go into reverse IT WAS ACCTUALLY 1st gear... Can anyone make sense of this?

I'm not a VR guy, so I can't say with any certainty they use the same shift linkage. If they do, that would be the first thing to look at.

look on your shift tower theres a plastic bracket that is probably broken.

heres a pic. http://gruvenparts.com/website/imgs/fullsize/305.jpg OeM on the right, gruven parts short shifter on the left. it minimized side to side play.

chances are your black plastic one broke and the cable has come off

Also VW says the trans is a "lifetime" trans and should have to service it, however is uses gear oil which will break down just like motor oil. I drained mine and use GM syncromesh and it cleared up my second gear grind.

A bit fuzzy because it's been 11 years since having an A3, but I know for sure the only plastic bracket on an A2 on the actual shift knob assembly is the reverse lockout. What causes most of the excessive side to side play is near the bracket that attaches the tranny mount to the tranny (that thing with the golf ball looking rubber piece.)

BTW, I go with Mobil1 Synthetic 75-90. (Technically not going at the moment, tranny going back in tomorrow, but that's beside the point).
