Default Transmission issue's.

I need a bit of advice from any of you automatic transmission mechanics out there.

Dunno what kinda' tranny I have in my '00 Harley F150 but..while I was driving it today..it felt as though it was slipping..I came to a halt, and the rpms began to fluctuate. On my column shifter, the overdrive off light was flashing and when I went to accelerate, it's like a clutch wouldn't bite or something. When it finally did (at about 3K rpm) it accelerated to around 40 or 50 smoothly..

I came to another stop, went to accelerate..it wouldn't bite till 4500 rpm ..and then when it finally DID it wouldn't come out of first gear at all..and there was a hellacious grinding sound. I pulled off of the road, went into neutral, rpm's smoothed out, yet, I could tap the gas and it'd drive forward in neutral.

I'm just wondering if any of you guys have ever run into this issue. The car was towed to my house by AAA so I'm gonna' see if I can't get them to haul it to a shop somewhere. Anything you guys think I should be looking out for when the diagnosis comes?

Not sure but it sounds expensive. Good luck.

That's a depressing thought.

Who'd have thought something that's lead a great life with less than 90K on the clock would need a tranny rebuild.

A 4R70W should be what tranny the truck has. I think ford just put a tougher gear set in them for the 5.4L engines. You should have no problem finding a shop that can work on it as they are extremely common in the ford world.

Hell its the tranny the mustang guys are beefing up for the street/strip drag cars. Even guys with 05+ stangs are replacing the 5r55s tranny with them because they are stronger and simpler to work on.
