Best gains from which intake???
I have a P-Flow on my Golf but I didnt feel any difference from the P-Flow from when I just had the airbox cut. I took my air box and cut a huge hole in the bottom. It had the cool sound and give me a little difference. But just modify the box. If you need help then give me a call bro. Ill help your cut it apart.

I would leave the stock airbox in place and use a K&N. Im not sure how much room is in an Mk4 engine bay but you may want to run some kind of ducting from the box to the lower grill. Ive seen it done before and thats what I have on my Mk3.

Actual cold-air intakes (like the AireTek) do actually work but is the $200+ price tag worth it? Thats up to you. A K&N panel filter is proven to give a few hp with no noticeable losses. Just dont mod the air box too much. The factory air channel (behind the headlight) works well. If anything just mod the inside of the airbox. Bottom line a cold-air intake will give you more power than a drop-in filter but it will cost more too.
