i think what they meant, jamie, is that FWD is undesirable for all types of racing, going into a turn with a FWD nose-diver isnt much fun, but hey, the SRT4 is a cool car, i'd rock one any day of the week, it all goes with what ya like

See post below
anyone want to take bets on when that sti destroys its first transmission, its second transmission, and each oem stock transmission thereafter before the owner cryotreats the gears and or goes to a dog box?
Every HP Subaru I ever saw at the track ended up like this.

while auto-xing...i've never seen an awd car dominate a fwd/rwd car. in fact, a properly setup fwd car will almost always be faster than an awd car because its a lighter more nimble setup.

don't believe me?

go to scca's website and look at the fastest cars in their respective classes...then look at the overall times and notice how most rwd and fwd cars are faster.

either way...h'es had some tranny issues and thats going to be his biggest hurdle in making lots of power.

uhhhhh first of all, you do not pull 60's like an awd, most competent awd drivers can cut a 1.7 easy and some cuttin 1.6's and better with a lot of power CONSISTANTLY!! So you enjoy your 2.0's.

Wow, this thread has gotten far afield, but no worries. All I will say to your post is, there is a reason AWD is banned or heavily penalized by additional weight in professional motorsports. More grip=better traction=faster lap times. Auto-xing is one thing, circuit racing is quite another, that much is true, but FWD is NEVER, EVER, EVER the best setup to go faster in any form of motorsport that I am aware of. It may work in certain auto-x classes, but I believe it is Miatas and other RWD platforms dominating the run-offs, especially before suffering the weight penalties put on wining cars like those in the Speed TC class. If FWD were superior, Formula One would be using it. They don't and there is a reason for it. FWD is a packaging compromise. Given a choice, any professional racer would choose RWD or AWD over FWD, all other components being equal.

Isn't the trans one of the biggest bottlenecks in almost any high horsepower car? I've seen everything from Camaros to RX-7s blow up trannies on big power. If he wants big stuff, he needs some straigh cut dogs and heavy duty differentials. Lots of money=problem solved. Or he will have to have an Easy Street auto put in, but that's not until he's pushing well over 800hp to the crank.

Welll, with all the championships Neons are winning in professional motorsports, I can see why I should give a shit. Show me one example of Neons winning a major championship in any form of motorsport and I will retract my "FWD is never the best option" statement. I'll say it again, there is a reason AWD is banned or penalized, while FWD is simply not run. Amateur racing really doesn't mean anything to me. When it counts, at the highest levels of motorsport, FWD is nowhere to be found, because it is a packaging compromise that is no good for maximum performance in any form of motorsport.
