gts problem
i purchased the silver 85 gts corrola from a guy about 4 mons ago and the car took a shit a couple weeks ago. i asked him if the car was in good running conditions and if it burnt/leaked any oil, he said no...i really didnt get to drive the car due to no tag/insurance and the car looked as if it were in really good shape and i took his word for it since he was a fellow tr member.
anyways i noticed when i 1st got the car it burnt a lot of oil and was extremely slow. the last day i drove the car it barely accelerated/started...im thinking its the piston rings/rod bearings...but im not sure. how much would it be to rebuild the engine and what are the possibilities of it being something else other than the bearings and rings?
btw, i checked all the engine codes and the only ones it showed was something with the a/c and the temp sensor (the one that sends the engine temp to the ecu not the temp gauge). i replaced the bad sensor and the car still ran the same...
any thoughts/comments would be much appreciated.
thanks,
sergio

a simple engine rebuild done by yourself will cost probably about 500
but theres no point in oem rebuild in my opinion
buy everything aftermarket and get more hp you'll love yourself for doing it
ask aphxero which way to go he'll supply sites and prices

First off do a compression test in each cylinder. If a few cylinders are low pour a little oil in them and if it goes up, that is a sign that the rings are bad. Smoking can also be a headgasket which would effect the way it runs / smoke. (It would most likely be overheating) Try doing a few things to see exactly what the problem is forsure before you go tearing apart the motor. If the compression is in fair shape do a tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter, maybe clean the injectors, change oil .. etc. I just figured I would fill you in on some things to help you obtain what is wrong. As far as you talking about the temp sensor, are you referring to the CHTS?
is your car running worse?? I think compression test will help finding problem. I remember your car was smoking like manny's delsol. his #3? one of ring is shot and making like 60hp out of d15. do you hear any unusualy sounds from the motor?
I replaced most of parts under enginebay on my gts, and took care of the car, and bybe it when i drive it on street, used jspec motor is still running very strong never had serious problem. jp drfters still use 16v (prob with cams, and some mods). you should put an another 16v 1weekend. I'll test drive the 20v ae101 soon. so i can give you opinion on 20v.

well i took off the spark plug cover today to check the plugs/wires and noticed that the 1st two spark plugs were drenched in oil (there was also a little bit of oil in the cap too). so i figured i would go ahead and change everything out (plugs, wires, cap, rotor), and the car is running the same way. ill give it some throttle and it slowly goes up to 3k rpms then it wont move...even when i floor it. the only way i can get it passed 3k rpms is if i play w/ the throttle then in higher rpms the engine sounds healthy. i feel as if the car is running in safe mode but it didnt throw any codes out except for the ones i previously posted. i havnt been able to do a compression test yet but i will as soon as i can get a hold of mark (mr2driver, i lost your #
)
but on another note i noticed there is a vac. hose thats not connected to anything but i cant figure out where it goes. its on a black sphere in the top right area of the engine bay and has a pretty big hose that goes to the throttle body and 2 smaller vac. lines (the one that is not connected is the one that says vac. on it). either way im pretty sure my rings are bad.
sorry for it being so long but i had a lot to post.
thanks,
sergio
