If you got an engine lift and stand, you can get the motor out of the car in about 3-6 hours (if it's your first time pulling a Subie motor it may take upto 6 hours). Stripping it down and pull the heads in about 1-3 hours depending on how fast you are working and don't break any tools/strip any bolts.

How bad is it knocking? It could be a spun bearing which you can check and change with the motor still in the car. All you do is drop the pan and its right there.

not bad and whoever asked me if we have an oil pressure gauge ya we do. and it alwyas hovers around 80 to 100 psi and i asked all the at s and r and they said thats great oil pressure..! but it knocks only on firsrt start ups in the morning and as soon as it hits oil pressure it faids out until you put a load on it and it starts to knock around 3 to 3500rpms

Do you get white smoke out of your exhaust when you start up? When my cyl 4 died from detonation I'd have a loud audible knock on start up that would start to fade away once the car got upto temp. I'd make a smoke screen of white oil smoke as well from my exhaust.

I would get the car back before they tear it apart, do a compression test, then drop the pan.
