I betcha Scott could still tune just as great on OpenECU software! Scott is good no matter what tool he uses to do it, right?

What I understand from that is Ecutek is feeling the pinch of opensource "Free" tools that alot of tuners are discovering do the same damn thing that ecutek does.

Connecting to, and modifying an ECU is no longer a black box dark art where by both the tuners and the car owners are at the mercy of companies like Ecutek.

People are discovering that all Ecutek is is a gateway into the ECU and the real magic is done by the tuner, NOT the ecutek software. They are worried and so they should be.

Its all in the tuner, always has been and in my mind, I'd pay a little more for a GREAT tuner who uses OpenECU software to connect to my car than an average tuner who uses Ecutek ... the magic comes from the tuner not the software he uses to connect, same as the magic comes from the mechanic, not the tools he uses.

I honestly dont think Ecutek will be missed if they take their toys and go sulk in the UK, the cats out of the bag now and in 12 months time the openecu software will be more than mature enough to handle anything ecutek could do, in fact it already can it just needs the tuners, the real magicians, to get more involved with it, and more used to it.

He is a picky person and thats what makes him a great tuner.

For me, i could never go with Enginuity, OpenECU, or any tuner for that matter other than Scott. For the amount of air time i have talk with him, i would feel terrible trying something new.

So, as obvious as it is, I stand by SS 100%. I would rather spend the money on a program professionally.
Scott is the magician, not the software he uses to tune your car... i have no doubt he could provide just as much of an awesome tune using free tools as he could using other software... the magic is in the tune, not the software used to flash the ECU...it just writes 1's and 0's to the rom.

haha.. thats the first thing that came to my mind aswell.. and being the good opensource nerd thant i am i LOVE openECU !

Ecutek and the other software companies need to worry more about distinguishing their product than sulking because people worked out how to connect to the ECU themselves.

Good thread this one I love to see opensource flourish.

and one last point, if they are correct that some of the openECU stuff was ripped from their product then the makers of the free stuff need to write that stuff out .. i support opensource but not ripping off anyone elses work.. they need to fix that if its true.

and they need to make sure the tools/code is supplied with the appropriate licence (GPL v3 springs to mind).

the reason I see tuners (such as SS) being angry about openecu software is that there ecu tuning tricks are basically open to anyone with a cable. Basically people could share tunes that they did not pay for. Tuners dont like that.

The Ecutek locks you out and you cannot read Ecutek tune unless you are an ecutek dealer.

Supposedly, the license is written to the RAM and cannot be removed even if the ECU is reverted to Ecutek stock. This being the case, when the stock ROM is pulled before tuning, the license is still in place. So in theory, the license is still valid as long as the original ROM is still present. Once you write a different revision over what was licensed...all bets are off.

This was what I got from talking to Ben @ Ecutek North America.
