The Truth about OpenECU
i dont know about anyone else but i'd rather spend $150 for a snowmann tune than wait 2 months and spend 5+ times more.. the problem is that Ekutec had a monopoly and now their losing it along with all the money it brought them.... hell, i'd be pissed too! but there is simply nothing they can do about it. if they sue the people that made the homebrew software then 18 more will come out of the woodwork. (just like NAPSTER)
i'd like the piece of mind knowing that my car was tuned by a PRO but im not going to pay that kind of price until i have something installed thats going to need a full tune with precision. (larger turbo, injectors, etc)

this all reminds me of the big hooplah that the music industry was throwing over the fact that Napster now allowed millions of people to share and transfer files and music over the internet and have access to music that they did not pay for.
before anyone could go to a concert and record the music live and if they were satisfied with a lesser quality product (like that of an amateur tuner with openecu) as opposed to the studio recorded version with super quality sound ( ecutek pro tuned). NOW people are able to copy that higher quality and the music company is being pissy because its losing money.
sorry folks but there's more to life than profit margins. imo they should work to better develope their product so that it stands out from the openecu alternative or offer a something the open-ecu CAN'T offer, such as a warranty and the already extensive customer and dealer service that they do currently offer.

the reason you dont hear cobb complain is cobb offers features that make them unique and also something that enginuity is not able to reproduce (map switching on the fly) not too many people are going to carry around a laptop with them to change maps on the fly even when realtime tuning becomes availible.
And the Cobb 2.0 seems to offer more features.

I can vouch for enginuity. I got a snowman tune and love it. As far as the safety goes, the safety and reliability depend on the car and the driver. You cannot blame a tuner for failing parts or you beating the crap out of your car. One of the main benefits of using a reflashing software is it will still retain the built in safety functions.
I also feel the only service I should pay for is the tuner, not the license. $600 is a lot to pay for something you can't hold onto. At least with cobb, and utec, when you are done with it you can sell it to someone else. So I don't see why ecutek is getting so upset, because they have not developed anything that is better than their competition. Instead of crying about it they should have thought about a way to beat their competitors. If somebody wants to use their time and knowledge to develop a free software for all to use, so be it, but you still have to find someone to tune it. Which is really what you are paying for to begin with.
No matter what business you are in there will always be someone who comes along and tries to do things cheaper, better, or faster.

I just want to follow this up with some info that I've learned from the post on wrxatlanta.
Enginuity is the name of the software created by Jared Gould. Enginuity itself is his original work.
HOWEVER, it is hard to prove one way or another if the original open source stuff was STOLEN by somebody hacking the Ecutek software itself.
Until this is discovered I can't ethically suggest the stuff, however in order to be competitive, I DO tune it...
