DET's get 15* BTDC. That's the 2nd mark from the right. From left to right the tick marks are -5, 0, 5, 10, 15, 20.

awesome, you actually answered what i was gonna post to, but didnt really care to, the left to right thing. thanks!

and my sr, from the guy i got it from, was set second from the left, and the cas was set to the left dot.. so im gonna have to take my cams off, turn the crank until its on the second right notch, and then put my cams back in at 10 and 12? and the cas to the right notch, correct?

You align the cams to the dots/links on the chain, or by counting teeth. Probably don't touch that. You install the CAS with the crank set at 2nd dot from left, cams lobes out, using the dots on the CAS shaft. You set the timing with a light to the 2nd dot on the right, after it's warmed up. If you did it right, the CAS should be more or less in the middle of the adjuster window.

i dont think there are any dots/dark links on my chain, does that really matter? if so, count the teeth on the cam gears..? im sorta confused... and how do i use a timing light if theres no plug wires? lol. i might be dumb...

yeah, timing an SR is confusing at first. pay carefull attention to the cam gears. the marks on the chain are just to make it easier.

as far as timing, i have a piece of an old plug wire that i mount under the stock coilpack assembly and onto the spark plug, then clamp the timing light around that part.

^trueeee!

well im gonna be doing this this weekend, and heres my plan: remove valve cover, turn to 15* btdc, remove cam bearing block things, place cams in at 10/12, replace chain, bolt everyting back down correctly(which btw, who knows what the torque spec is on the cam gears?), and re-stab cas.

Turn engine to TDC, 2nd dot from the left, with cam lobes on #1 facing outwards. Makes sure the dots on the cam gears look like this:

If they don't, then remove the cams and make it look like that. Don't forget to remove and reinstall the chain tensioner before removing the cam. To double check, make sure there are 20 pins between the 2 dots, where the chain goes between the 2 gears.

Now remove the CAS, and reinstall it with this procedure.

Leave it in the middle of the adjustment, put everything back together, retime the car with a timing light.

There is a black wire loop on the back of the coilpack harness that you can put the timing light on, because there aren't any traditional spark plug wires. The light should show somewhere near the 15* mark. If it's way the hell to the right and the car seems to idle fine, then you've got the pickup on backwards. Remove it, rotate it 180* then reclamp. Time to 15* once it's warmed up. Done.
