TDC = top dead center = 0* before TDC = second from the left.

15* BTDC = base/idle timing on a DET = second from the right. = use a timing gun.

The CAS thing you just have to do. Align the dot on the right. When you push it in, the gear will spin that shaft, because it's helically cut. Once it's in, the left will line up, and the assembly should be near the middle of the adjustment.

Yes, Pins = chain link pins.

ok great. so ive taken everyhting apart, and have set the crank to tdc. and the cam gears are lining up as 10 and 12. but in that pic, it show the 12 to be more of a 1, or 1:30.. im gonna take some pics.

10 and 12 are approximate. Follow the FSM pic Epstein posted, specifically the number of teeth.

The chain will have slack anytime something caused the crankshaft to rotate backwards. You have to rotate the crank clockwise to keep everything tensioned properly. This is important.

ok, so i was taking the tensioner off, and when i got it unbolted, it sprung out, and the chain went slack and i cant get the chain off of the intake cam. however, i removed the chain from the exhaust cam and set it as shown in the FSM pic. everything is good, 20 pins between the 2 marked teeth, but i cant get the tensioner back in..... i figured you were supposed to do this

but i still cant get it in enough to push the chain over, and get it bolted back in.....

ok, so heres some pics of what im dealing with.

chain slack, everything lined up, tdc, and correct cam angles(they dont look right, but theres 20 pins between them).

this side of the chain got super tight

so i rotated the crank clockwise, and they look better, and theres enough slack to put the tensioner in like this

but i end up with this

and further more, do i put the tensioner in, then knock the swing arm off the pin to set the tension?

yes, make sure that you snug the chain by moving hte crankshaft slightly. you wanna work your way counter clockwise from the crank aroun (crank, driver cam, pass cam) all the positions TDC, 10 o clock 12 o clock wont be exact (especially with a high mileage chain, they stretch over time) and get the crank where it needs to be with the chain, then work the chain onto the drivers side cam where its tight before moving on, important thing here is to NOT get a bunch of slop. you can line the gears up and the crank, but if theres a link or two extra between 2 points, then its not going to be timed right.

whoa posted this before you posted pics. way to much slack there to be rotatin stuff. start with your crank and work your way around. you can move everything back and forth to get stuff to go into there respective teeth, but you shouldnt have to move much
