Default Ring and pinion ?

Ok, I'm completely fed-up with the j30 3.65fd I'm running right now. I've checked the tranny ratios and FD ratios with 26" and 28" tires. Right now with 26" tires @8.5k in 5th, I'm in the 225mph range. Waaaaay too high. So, I'm looking into the fontier/xterra 4.636 and 4.9 FDs. I'm kinda leaning towards the 4.9fd since it changes the ratios to within 2-3mph of a b16a tranny. So my question is, has anyone ran/drove a SR'd 240 with the 4.9fd? also, don't post that I'm crazy for leaning towards the 4.9fd, the SR will be receiving a built VVL head swap in 6-8mo. 10.5k rpm FTW!

Dude, I would love to drive a SR 240 with a 4.9 rear end. That would be hella nasty. I have had a 4.36 and it is plenty.

If you're going to run a 28" tire, you'll need a 4.636 just to get back to the stock equivalent (25" tire, 4.083). I'd definitely go to a better ratio if you're on, what I'm assuming is, a slick. J30 is only 3.90, though. Still crummy with a 26" or 28".

Mazworx has both the 4.636 and 4.9 for sale under "used race parts". I'm sure they'd be happy to talk to you about what's best as well.

^ok, 3.9 is gay as fawk. So, that changes my top speed to around 200mph. Still way to much. Not runnin slicks but, big ass DR's. Thanks for the info, I'd much rather buy just the ring and pinion instead of the whole carrier. Going to email mazworx.

did you ever ride on decent sized DR's? Or was it just on some low pro 17"/18" tires?

Just checked with Mazworx and they want more for just the ring and pinion than I can get the whole carrier for. If I buy the whole carrier for $250ish, I can sell the empty carrier for $100ish. Making the ring and pinion cost $150. They want $275+s&h just for the ring and pinion. There's must be 24k gold plated.

You can sell used Xterra carriers for $100? Because that's all they come in. Mazworx probably bought the Nissan Motorsports kits (because they're a sponsor), which retail in the $500 range. I'm just saying, there are cheaper ways, but the Maz price is decent. It's not like you can just get a Skyline carrier like the 4.3's.

^they came in '02 frontiers and '02-'03 xterras. The 4x4 guys break carrier housings when they bang against rocks. So yes, the case is worth $100. If I really looked hard through the Nissan 4x4 forums, I could find a 4.9fd for under $150. Since they run 5+:1 finals with big tires. And 4.9 carriers are all over the place, there are 3-4 on eBay now. I appreciate the help and I'm not taking a shot at you. I take your info as the truth all the time. Your not just some Internet shmuck.

What are the dimensions on the xterras factory LSD ? Would the center carrier (without r&P) go into a 240sx housing, does it have the 240sx/J30/etc output shaft size, or the Q45/GTR etc ?

The xterra front carrier is a r200 variant so, it should fit. Idk about the output shafts.
