If it was valvetrain it wouldent be RPM reliant it would do it all the time. Martin has a point and thats the best way to tell if it's a rod knock, try it out cant hurt. Also check your timing chain, hold your hand on the front of the cover and take it to the RPM that it's making the noise and feel for vibrations.
