Ka Oil Pan Question
where is the oil pickup located?? the reason im asking is because my oil pan is dented and was wondering where the oil pickup is so i can react quick and not be pinching oil flow and cause my car to have a spun bearing. thank you
so if theres a good size dent on the hump thats closest to the ground would me im going to expect a spun bearing if oil pan is not replaced? let me know, my friend is giving me an undented one, but im just trying to clear things up so i know if it needs to be replaced or not.
pull the pan and bang the dents out of it. inspect the oil pick up if it is pushed or bent up a little bit replace it. mine was pushed up on my SR from being shipped on a crate. Years later it broke off. I fucked up every bearing, walked the crank, and put cracks all over my bell housing. Oil pick ups are a weak part with the bottom of the pick up glued and pinched on. They can't be fixed with welding so you have to get a new one for $40.

I was just about to ask the same thing. I've got one that looks like it bottomed out on a speed bump. The "hump" is all kinds of pushed up. I just finished pulling it, the pick up seems fine, but something is telling me that the pick up is sitting on the bottom of the pan... Would that cause an issue? the tube doesn't seem bent or anything, just the mesh end of it is a little squished and is probably sitting on the bottom of the pan...
well the reason i ask, was because im getting a non dented oil pan and i was just trying to figure out if mine needs to be replaced or what not.
next question, how much of a pita is it to take off and replace the pan.

its not a major pain, but it is one of those tasks that not many look forward to.... basically, in a nushell, you have to undo the motor mounts and jack the motor up. much easier if you have a lift... you have to a) jack it high enough to pull the pan out and b) not so high you break something on top. The crank journals are basically down in the pan, so not only do you have to jack it high enough for the humps to clear the crossmember, but also high enough to clear the journals. I managed to get mine off without taking the pick up off, but most people get a big enough gap to get there hand in there and unbolt the pick up... oh and drain the oil first...
i find it harder to put back in because you're more worried about getting crap in it and if you use gasket maker, you don't want to smear it all over the place, effectively ruining your gasket...
it isn't so much hard as it is time consuming, its one of those jobs you've jsut got to hold your mouth right. ya know
