So i just went and picked up my flywheel from the machine shop. Do i really need it "stepped". Will it slip if i drop it in without the step? I totally forgot to tell the guy and machine shops are closed on the weekends. Plus it'll be super hard to get a break from work and run up there again before they close.

The step on the flywheel is to keep the pressure plate at the same level as the clutch surface, so yes you need to have the step machined in. If not, flywheels wouldn't come with it that way.
