Is there a local machine shop that will nitride a crank and if so what is the average cost? Just curious.

Factory 7 bolts don't use a nitrated crank either and don't walk in a few thousand miles?
Why is that?

it costs around 200 to nitride a crank. closest place is Jax that I know of.

I would blame mechanic because you cant put a new bearing on a used crank that has minor thrust surface wear. it may look good to the eye. may even mike out within factory spec. if there is just .002 wear on crank it would still be well within spec. but the the surface does not wear evenly. it wears to original bearing. its like changing your brake pads without cutting rotors. not a great idea. in this case a very bad idea.

there are many other aspects to making a rebuild work. I dont have time to discuss them all.

A mechanic only uses what you bring him, Every engine I have ever had built I brought the parts to the mechanic for assembly. If I brought him parts that shouldn't be used with new bearings and I don't tell him this, than I assume responsibility. Tom should have had a nitrated or aftermarket crank put in that engine to begin with. End of story.. If Tom didn't know, the mechanic didn't know, why as his friend did you not educate him on the subject. This thread could have been avoided.

Are you saying a 7 bolt must have a nitrated crank put in or it will walk in a few thousand miles?
Cause of its not what your saying then everything you posted is worthless.

How many 2g's with 7 bolts out there do you think have nitrated cranks in them?
Or are you just blinding defending someone I havent blamed for this. Even though he never even checked the clearance on the bearing when assembling it. Said he didn't have any plastic gauge.

Damn that sucks. But I can say one thing about the nitrated 7bolt crank since I had one on my past car. It held up great for thousands and thousands of miles. Jerry was the builder of the bottom end. Well Tom as long as you have another engine ready to throw in then its not the end of the world. lol

People, if a nitrated crank is needed in a 7 bolt to keep from walking in a few thousand miles don't you think there would have been a huge problem a long time ago with all 7 bolt cars.
I'm not saying using a nitrates crank is a bad idea but it's not needed to get a car to last more than a few thousand miles. Debating that is just stupid.
