Default The dangers of rust

So I picked up a 91 tsi awd to turn into my DD/project car. Rust GALORE on this thing. There isn't a piece of metal that didn't look like it sat at the bottom of the ocean forever. Just curious your thoughts on how severe rust damage can inhibit a cars performance and/or drivability. The only thing that comes to mind would be severe flexing or something just not staying bolted in.
