ok, so i picked up a coil from a friend that he took off his car tried that and it did the same thing, brought them into auto zone to get tested and all the plug spots checked out but the plug from the ecu was a little high. both checked out exactly the same. so is it possibly the ecu. or the cam angle or crank senor?

The ECU on my Avenger screwed up, and the car didnt even start. You would also have a "Check Engine" light coming on. If it were the ECU, I'm pretty sure the car wouldnt start. There could be a split in the wire somewhere and could be grounding out... but that still doesnt sound right. I still come back to that coil pack.

the code p01391 is for intermittent loss of cam or crank postion signal, i would disconnect the cam and crank sensors and check the connectors for corrosion if they are fine disconnect the pcm connectors and check them for corrosion and pins pushed in...if they are all ok then it is probably one of the two sensors.

This guy seems to know a little bit lol...these guys can all venture guesses as to what may be wrong, but the 420a powerplant is a whole different beast from the 4g63...some general automotive concepts are the same yes, but many other things completely contradict each other. I understand the code that little scanner or what not gave ya, but I'm still curious what comes up if you do the keydance as I stated yesterday.

Yeah I understand that...all I was tryin to say is that it's quite easy to just name parts to throw at a car, when instead simple questions and diag can help narrow it down and possibly save time and money. Then again, I pulled this all outta my ass, and the coil pack is indeed the culprit hehe.

ok i'll just start over. 1996 eclipse rs

check engine light is on and reads a P1391 code.
engine idles fine but as soon as temp gauge gets close to half way the car shuts off.
both ignitions tested fine where plugs go, but a little high where the ecu plugs in.

so i should check cam angle and crank and see if either of those are bad.

i'm sorry that i'm not very experienced, this is my first DSM. i love it and i really appreciate the help you guys are giving me. please keep helping me with suggestions, because i really want it driveable.

This is most likely gonna be the cam sensor. You can find it on the front driver side of the head where the valve cover end of the exhaust cam is at. Sometimes that connection can get loose or possibly even dirty. Another random occurence is that your egr tube could actually melt through the wiring harness due to stupid engineering by chrysler. Check all of the above and see what's up.
