You should definitely have someone experienced help you with this car before something goes awry.

And then sent you on your way? I have to assume that the individual you spoke with understood your lack of experience after discussing the problem with you, and therefore I am curious as to why they're not working on your car. Did they at least give you a quote? Did you want to do this yourself? It's probably not a good idea for someone with your experience to replace a water pump on this motor. Take it somewhere.

the thermostat is probably getting stuck closed. i would start by putting a new thermostat in since its a cheap 5 minute job. if that doesnt fix it, then it might be time for a new pump, if it still doesnt fix it, something may be clogged up in your cooling system. im pretty sure you have to take the timing belt off to change the waterpump (ive always done both at the same time, so ive never tried to take a water pump off without the timing belt, and i think a timing belt tensioner pulley gets in the way) so if you arent comfortable with doing a timing belt, then basically dont touch it. i would start with the thermostat....thats honestly my best guess. it sounds like you are getting some flow, but it may be limited, because if you were getting no flow, turning the heater on wouldnt do anything.

This is all correct. But, if one of "the brothers" said you needed a new water pump (as opposed to saying you might need a new water pump), and assuming they're as honest as their reputation suggests, you're going to need to take this somewhere, because I can only imagine what would happen if you tried to set the timing on this car.
