well he was told that the rear brakes were the same.. and i know they are NOT!

 

yeah, definatly post up some pics with like a tape measure laying next to them so we know how big the gsx rear rotors are compared to the gst/gs/rs rotors...
according to three different dealerships, the rear rotors for all of the 2nd gen eclipses share the same part number and therefore are the same size....


did you do the swap or do you have a "stock" GSX?

 

I knew the fronts were bigger. That wasn't really in question. The confusion there came from when I called the first dealership, I talked to some dumb guy that said the rotors on the GS and the GSX were the same. I didn't ask about the GST. We knew that the GST were smaller. And we knew that the GSX were bigger. But when the guy at the dealership said that the GS were the same size as the GSX, it mads us raise a brow in confusion. You would expect someone at the dealership to know what they are talking about, or at least have the tools availible to give the right information.
The part that we were really in question about was the rear GSX brakes. Some people say that they are the same. Some people say they are different. We know that the GSX rear calipers are the same single piston caliper that the the rest of the models have. I would assume that the rotors would be the same aswell. There are alot of people that support that assumption. But there are some rather well informed people that say that the rear GSX rotors are larger than the rest. According to the dealerships, they are the same.

I'm wondering if people just thought the rotors were bigger so they ended up with two sets of front rotors thinking that it was a front set and a rear set. They just had to get the GSX mounting hardware to mount the calipers where they needed to be to fit. At that point, the mounting hardware was probably two front sets, too. Just no one noticed.
If I got the whole swap and the rotors were all the same size, I wouldn't think twice about it because it would make sense that the 4wd GSX would have bigger brakes all the way around. But at the same time, I doubt Mitsubishi would have put the same calipers on different rotors. That wouldn't really be that cost effective when it came down to parts and manufacturing.

Hopefully we can get this all straightened out.

 

i just recently had two subframes next to each other. one from my gst, and one from a stock gsx. i wanted to put my gst rotors on the gsx, but i looked at them next to each other and could tell just by looking that the gsx rotors had more surface to them. i even had 2 friends over at the time who also agreed.

 

i just measured them, and the GST calipers were 1 1/2 inch of surface. the GSX calipers had 2 inches of surface. ill find a camera and try to take a pic if you want.

the dealerships said that the GSX rotors were an inch bigger.... in the front....

I'm thinking you somehow ended up with front calipers in the rear as weird as that sounds...

........ although, i wonder, did the GSX come in 2wd and 4wd? I thought it was just 4wd so I didn't bother to specify that.... maybe thats where the kink is coming from....

 

yea they only came in 4wd, the GST was 2wd. and i dont see how they could be from the fronts. not from a gsx at least. and i dont even know if the fronts would mount on the rear, since you would have to get the calipers from the front too.

 

i don't know... thats kinda weird though....
you've got the dealerships saying one thing
and then
you've got a person with a tape measure saying the opposite...
maybe we need to get ahold of mitsubishi headquaters....

 

lol the gsx is always AWD, unlike the TSi, which could be both FWD or AWD.

this is just like the dealerships that said crankwalk wasnt covered under warranty, or that the thrust bearing couldnt POSSIBLY fail

 

Im pretty sure that would be impossible, or at least impractical. The rear rotors have to have a much taller "hat" for the emergency brake to work. The front rotors might fit on the back, but i dought the emergency brake would work at all.

Except of course in Dane and Fernando's case. lol
