Its been awhile, but I remember it some thing like this-

remove back seat
remove FP cover
cut a little metal
remove FP unit
take FP off
put new filter screen on new FP
reverse process
push down cut metal
pop in back seat
Apparently a 2g fwd is much different than a 1g. Lucky you.

Sounds like the o-ring isn't sealed well on the top of the pump. My car has had that problem, already removed it and replaced, thought I fixed it, it got worse after a week or two. I'm about to pull the thing again, chop off the stupid o-ring hat on the pickup, and run some high pressure fuel hose from the pump to the now hat-free pickup with some of those nifty little clamps they use on Nissan fuel hoses.

Yea i checked the VFAQa and it looks pretty simple to do. After reading it i think thats the problem with the engine taking a while to fire up, the o ring isnt on right.
