Mookie...
You have started the OLD long standing debate about Rotor vs Piston.. LMAO
To be truthfull, the Rotary motor was indeed designed and realized by a German engineer, Dr. Wankel. However... he was NOT able to resolve issues that he came across and Mazda bought the patent and has been perfecting the Rotary since the late 60's. You are right about them being problamatic in the past BUT it has now come to the point where it is much more reliable than 20yrs ago. I would honestly say that the Puerto Ricans and Australians have taken the Rotary motor to new heights. Again... as I stated before..the person that TUNES your Rotary will make or break your setup.
As for other car companies, MANY of them tried Rotary motors BUT they couldn't make them dependable.(Chevy, Mercedes,NSU, BMW and a few more).. only MAZDA stayed the course and has made them what they are today... A simple motor that produces more power per liter ratio than anything else out there...
As for an LS swap... It is NOT as cheap as you make it sound. Please let everyone know what it cost to do the conversion (which is why everyone who sells a swapped 7 ask such HIGH prices) and for that cost you could go 20B. I have told my son that if I tire of the Rotary, I would install an LS into my 3rd Gen and he simply laughed at me... Go figure... he owns a 3rd gen as well.... Hope this clears some of the air for everyone...

Mookie.. I just realized you drive a VW and NOT a V8 swapped 7 so some questions/facts you wont have answers for...

Yes I did have a vw. I havent updated that. I used to be under another name on TR when I was marrried for many years under the Mazda forum. I also would like to make something VERY CLEAR to you. I had a 1994 fd for quite some time and after it went KA FUCKING BOOM I went ls1. Second part, yes adding a v8 isnt cheap as well as any motor swap isnt cheap. I looked to do a 20b swap and after much looking around and hearing everyone Including Pettit Racing and Lowe racing telling me to make sure I do a re-build first I figured is it worth dumping all that money into another rotary thats going to pop under to much pressure. Yes the 20b's do need re-builds before installing. Jesus im so tired of hearing rebuild, rebuild, rebuild that I give up on them. So if you wish to call Pettit and ask for what they charge [if they are still around] then you do the math for a 20b vs v8 swap. You will see a HUGE diffrence in price. I would also love to add the fact that my ex and I took a trip to pettit and was granted a drive in his 20b car. I was not impressed! I have now ridden in 2 20b rx7's, one single t66 and many twin setups. nothing has touched the speed or great put you in the seat feeling as a cammed v8. Nothing.
Also ask candy what the thought of a v8 swapped rx7 when you call. They loved it when they seen my friends Duaines ls1 swapped fd. In fact they loved it so much they were secretly going to build one.

MOOKIE...
Why are you so ANGRY about Rotary motors and their reliability??

Have you looked at all the reports about VW's and their reliability? They have one of the WORST ratings when it comes to customer satisfaction. They are electrical nightmares and their piston motors have been ranked as one of the most unreliable motors since the 90's....

Go figure... I guess Popular Mechanics must have it in for VW....

And before you have a brain hemerage... I was once a VW man for many many years... And YES... I still have a love for them even though they get POOR ratings...

Ok you asked a question here so let me answer it. I do not have a problem with n/a rotarys. I have had a few first gen's back in the day and I loved them. I just have a issue with turbo non-reliable rotarys and everytime someone asks what should they do and I even mention swapping the motor someone on here replys back with a statement that usually starts this war.

Ok now on to the VW thing. You ever have one of those moments where you open your mouth about something that you really aernt sure why? Well i do believe you just did. Im going to tell you what I mean by that. I was married for quite awhile. I am now going through a seperation/divorce. I lost alot of things. The VW was a borrowed, hand me down car that I have been driving that my brother loaned me. luckly I have a nice brother that happened to have a extra car for me to drive until I saved up for a new one. And to clear things up even more I have recently got a new car. So I appreciate you taking the time to read my profile however I do believe that I just cleared things up. I am not angry however when people jump into a subject in a forum and say sstuff I back it up. Have a great nite

Good luck moving on...

And as I stated... I still love VW and how they look modified.... in all actuality... I like all modified cars as long as they are done tastefully...
